Injured my plantar plate (again). Not sure how long I'll need to be out, but I absolutely loathe the idea of XT right now. I've been doing some upper body lifting, but the thought of trying to bike or aqua jog fills me with dread. I know fitness will be lost, I'm not sure I care right now. Has anyone taken a fairly large chunk of time off with no cross training? What happened when you went to get back into things?
You come back faster if you cross train.
IMO the hours and hours spent cross training while off running should be spent working towards fixing the injury. Pretty easy and effective to spend a couple hours a week rolling the dozens of plantar muscles and calf. Most injuries are undertreated.
I get really into swimming when injured, but I dont try to fixate on making it "XT for running." Unpopular opinion probably, but I feel like coming back from an injury with your run-specific fitness struggling a little helps keep intensity at bay while your musculoskeletal system catches up. So I "cross-train" in that i still exercise because that's just...generally healthy, but I'm not super worried about how well it will preserve my running fitness.
