Here is my story: my family came from the Philippines so most of the people there knew English. My problem was that we were poor and I was seven when we came to the US. My parents refused to let me take ESL so I struggled to learn both written and colloquial English. My other problem was my original instruction before coming to the US was British English. Most of my life people criticized my grammar. They accused me of writing like a thirteen year old. So I pushed to constantly learn and even took honors courses in English in both high school and college. I have asked for guidance to improve my grammar in high school and in college: not one English teacher or professor could direct me to a book that breaks down the language. I even asked ESL instructors if I could sit in their courses and responded in ridicule and told me I do not need it. With the advent of technology I have relied on technology and the internet to fix my grammar but there is still that drive and conviction that I could do better. I dropped out of grad school because it was a terrible experience: my professors told me my grammar was not up to par with their standards. Then I joined this platform and figured someone can relate or someone out there can show some empathy and understanding of my struggle. Does anyone have advise where I can start?

Ok. You're already at the stage already that the only way you're going to improve your English any further is to read lots and lots of CONTEMPORARY FICTION books, looking up the words you don't know, reading out loud to improve your pronunciation, and slowly, but surely, absorbing a feel for how the language works. You don't need a grammar book. You're beyond that level. Whatever grammar you still need can be absorbed by extensive reading.
