Built a tool for Teachers, trying to market (website feedback?)

Hey all,

Oral Reading Fluency is incredibly important for burgeoning readers. It needs to be measured tracked, and if needed, used to justify reading interventions.

Currently, teachers do this the old fashioned way, 1-on-1 teacher to student with a "levelled" reading passage (false precision) and a stopwatch. The accuracy is only as good as the teacher's skill and training.

Historically, Automatic Speech Recognition software has been hamstrung by being overly-strict, not understanding children's inflection and pitch, and generally being impersonal.

I tried to address this by building my tool which I call Reading Pacer, which allows any parent or teacher to use any physical book (or from our digital library) to quickly and easily run regular, long, or specialized ORF assessments on their own.

All the feedback I have received has been positive, but online marketing is not my strong suit. I would like to submit my website for feedback but I think that might be against the sub rules(?)

This sounds like a genuinely useful tool, especially since it works with physical books instead of requiring schools to use a specific reading program.

  It does! Thank you for the kind words. I actually built it on the premise of working directly with physical books since my wife (a teacher) needed apps to help her count words and lines when doing this tedious task, so i thought I might as well build the whole thing. Interestingly, early customers wanted access to a virtual library for ease of use, so I reluctantly added one with the idea being any ORF is better than none (even if its on a screen, its still useful)

This sounds genuinely useful. I’d market the outcome time saved, consistent scoring, and clearer progress tracking. A small teacher pilot with measurable results would likely be more effective than broad advertising. I’d also make student-data privacy very clear on the website.

  Thank you for the response. I have definitely put a lot of thought into privacy and COPPA / FERPA. Is there any wording in particular you think I should emphasize? I also have done 2 small pilots at a local school in my area, they went well but honestly not sure where to go from here. Its definitely something that is needed - I see reports every day from strangers that show kids struggling. Its not being done nearly enough in schools even though its considered the "thermometer of a kids reading ability". The problem is there is no money that is easy to uncover. Selling to schools is a nightmare and parents expect schools to do the teaching. I am heartened when strangers do tests on my website

the thing id sort before marketing is whos actually buying. teachers finding u individually is a completely different funnel to selling into a school or district, and only one of those has a budget attached. changes ur whole website copy depending which ur going for

First of all, congratulations on building something that solves a real problem. That's already a huge step. One thing I've learned from running a software business is that having a good product and getting people to discover it are two completely different challenges. Instead of focusing only on online marketing, I'd try getting your tool into the hands of a small group of teachers and schools, collect real success stories, and let those become your marketing. Testimonials and case studies from educators can be far more convincing than ads. Out of curiosity, have you spoken directly with schools to understand what would make them comfortable adopting a tool like this, or has your focus mostly been on parents so far?

I think getting feedback on your website is actually one of the highest leverage things you can do right now If the subreddit doesn't allow links in posts, you could ask people to DM you for the URL or use one of the dedicated website review communities fresh eyes often spot messaging issues you become blind to
