Muting strings between power/barre chords

Hey guys, I’m a fairly new player and was wondering about the proper technique for doing muted string strums between power chords/barre chords. I’ve seen some people just lift their fingers slightly but keep the chord shape, and I’ve seen some people move their fingers over to cover the strings with more of a flat hand. Isn’t the “flat hand” method to stop harmonics on these ghost strums? If so, does that make it cleaner and should I always practice doing that? I’ve found though it’s more difficult to do when playing super fast riffs, and since I’ve seen people do both I’m just confused now 😂
