The biggest victim of Kishimoto writing things as he went, lol. It’s extremely understandable, given the hellish schedule he had for years, but still, Hiruzen was not handled well in the story retrospectively.
He's the Professor Xavier of Naruto. This kindly, supposedly wise figure who gets retconned into doing the most heinous shit. (Though not all of Xavier's are retcons.)
It’s a common thing In tons of fictional stories If the adult authority figures are allowed to be competent the world wouldn’t Jeff a teenage hero to solve all the problems
It's weird how no one mentions Jiraiya being chosen as the godfather but dips out for 12 years before meeting Naruto. And then proceeds to treat him as a pest up till he turned into a nude woman...
Kishimoto did not write Hiruzen promising to take care of Naruto, and I can’t recall if he wrote the Sasuke scene. At least for his relationship with Naruto, a lot of contention with Hiruzen’s character comes from anime filler and had nothing to do with Kishimoto’s writing.
Lol, Sasuke wasn't even supposed to exist. Kishimoto was making everything up as he went, which is why there are tonnes of head scratchers in the story
I vaguely remember hearing/reading something about how was either pushing himself or was being pushed by the publisher to put out one chapter (book???) every week or something along those lines. Does that have any truth to it?
Yeah I mean tbf Hiruzen had Danzo trying misguidedly to protect the village making everything worse than it could’ve been too
We’ve known since chapter 1 he cared for Naruto and considered it the fourth’s wish he be treated well. Nothing about his treatment toward Naruto changes with later revelations, he already saw Naruto as fourth’s legacy since day 1
Naruto started out as literally just the orphan of nameless nobody parents and all the stuff about him being related/connected to important figures came later; which makes the indifference and/or lack of real effort to improve his childhood QOL seem really assholish. So many characters who were personally loyal to the 4th and Kushina are made to look like they really let them down when you go back over part 1 of the series.
