Mandatory and filterable AI disclosure is a feature I would love and Steam could improve on That being said, you can't just slap that on and call it a day, you'd need to do everything else well that also works great on steam and then put that on top
I decided to create a concept for the ideal platform for both users and developers, ideally one that would be superior to Steam. I'm interested in hearing the community's opinion on what they'd like to see in the "ideal Steam" and what annoys you most about gaming platforms. The idea isn't to create an impossible platform that would bankrupt developers on day one. The idea is to create a concept that would provide the MAXIMUM possible experience for gamers without the developers suffering from losing money while creating the perfect service. I'm interested in hearing your thoughts on this.
By the way, I have already come up with a concept for a profile-related function, and also decided to call this platform "Nexus" (I repeat, this is purely a concept, not a full-fledged program).

It would have to have been developed 10+ years ago. I'm much too invested into steam with all the games I have on there. Pretty much no other platform will make me switch unless it somehow allows me to bring my whole steam library over.
No platform as good as you could make it would win over steam as things are now. We trust steam and we've invested in money in games on this specific platform. So even if a platform would be released and let's say the gap was as big as EA app and steam, I guess old steam users wouldn't switch.
For a start if I thing a game platform called Nexus I would just think of the nexus mod manager. In regards to what I would change in steam there are only a few minor things: \- Split achievements into game & DLC so you won’t lose a 100% when new DLC drops, \- Smarter game sorting when companies use inconsistent naming you can still show games in their correct release or play order \- a better way to sort your screenshots would be nice, the current UI isn’t the end of the world but it could be better Honestly for the most part steam does 99% of what I want it to do. I don’t often notice what I want to have extra but when I use another platform I do notice what they lack compared to steam.
Steam are already working on letting devs split dlc and base game achievements
Honestly at this point doing a better version of steam is a losing strategy. Peter thiel is an evil lizard person but his book zero to One has a really great breakdown of how basically all these tech companies operate like monopolies even if they technically aren't. Like there are other search engines besides Google, arguably some better, but only one of them is used as a verb. At the stage valve is in you can't just make something better, but better by an order of magnitude and/or something that satisides a totally different market need. I think the best option anyone has for a competitor is to make some kind of Netflix style subscription platform where a monthly/yearly subscription unlocks the entire library including new releases.
Steam is already doing that, for 99% of it it's just perfect. They optimize for sales, and as a gamer I come to steam to spend my money, so the faster I find something worthy of spending it on, the better my experience is. I don't want to see too many low quality random games, and I believe if you lose money as a game developer, most of the time your game or marketing is just not good enough. Thanks for not including the profile-related function in your post btw, very kind of you to ask your competitor's community for ideas while keeping your own idea to yourself.
The only thing I regret Steam doesn't have is the no DRM like Gog.
Just conduct business in a manner that not only protects but supports consumers proper, Maintain an active staff for regular maintence and the service sells itself.
Everything Steam has with the addition of EGS free weekly games. It won't happen because Valve aren't desperate, but it would be nice
Own the games you buy.
In my opinion it would be Steam, but with more media formats instead of just games. Movies, music, books, magazines, comic books, all available via Steam. You purchase it once, and you can access it forever and from wherever. It would also allow devs/creators/publishers ways to sell physical merchandise.
This is the exact example of "We have too many programming languages, I'll make a new language to overthrow all other languages => now we have too many programming languages +1" I don't want a "platform" I want to play games. Steam got forcefed down my throat along the way and I've gotten used to it, but truthfully the platform itself brings absolutely nothing to the table and it takes more out of the table. I'd prefer physical medium instead of "not owning anything" which is what steam took from us. The best platform is no platform. So unless Nexus is not a platform it won't be competing with steam and will just be another epic.
