From the Article Arconic Foundation, through a unique partnership with national nonprofit Undue Medical Debt, has helped abolish nearly $30 million in medical debt for communities near Arconic facilities in Iowa, Pennsylvania, Indiana, New York, and Tennessee. Individuals who qualified received a letter in Undue Medical Debt-branded envelopes recently, letting them know some or all their medical debt is gone Over 26,000 individuals benefited from this abolishment, with an average debt of $1,127 eliminated. The recipients live in multi-county areas near Arconic’s US facilities, including those in the communities of Davenport, Alcoa, Lancaster, Lafayette, Springdale, Massena, Bloomsburg, Cranberry, and Pittsburgh. This includes more than 2,775 residents in the Quad Cities, where over $3.5 million in medical debt was eliminated. Undue uses income and debt criteria to identify people in financial need and select the debt that they purchase. To qualify, individuals must have an income at or below 400% of the federal poverty level (just over $100,000 for a family of three) or have medical debt that is 5% of their income or more.

  Medical debt is hella distressed debt so it's hard to collect. As such it's sold for pennies on the dollar in the secondary markets.

  This is a penny-on-the-dollar model, meaning the medical institutions probably had a major loss, but were happy to get anything at all. US healthcare is completely twisted and much more expensive than here in the EU or any other nation in the world; the US is about 50% more expensive (14,9k per capita) than the next nation in the world, which is Switzerland (9,9k per capita) where GDP per capita is 25% higher than in the US. Being this expensive has to do (among other things) with the refusal of the US to set wage ceilings for medical professionals, and the aversion to socialize anything (like bulk buying medicine for all hospitals in a state, which would make the negotiating position of hospitals stronger vs Big Pharma, and Big Pharma buys politicians through SuperPACs so that is not going to happen). The US is very explicitly against employees or consumers or even government institutions banding together to make a fist against corporations. Corporations are always better protected than even the government, and that's why you have high prices.

  The market value of the debt is completely different from the cost of the medical care. They are buying the debt of those least likely to be able to pay it back. The debt is trading so cheap because nobody expects to be able to collect the debt value, so it's worth very little on the open market. This has no connection to how much the medical treatment cost which created the debt.

  I just got diagnosed with lipedema and had to get leggings to help with it. They’re pretty normal leggings, but they have a nubby texture to stimulate lymph flow. They billed my insurance $1,011!

  Only for those who are unlike to ever pay it back. This debt is so cheap on the open market because nobody expects be able to collect on it, so the debt has very little value. For borrowers who are like to be able to pay back the debt or partially or at it back, the market value it much higher and the leverage of buying it and forgiving the loan isn't there.

  We spent 115 days in the NICU. Nearly $2 million "billed" to the insurance, not including our child's birth and emergency c-section. Not sure what the insurance actually paid for it, luckily we didn't have to pay anything beyond our deductible which we had already hit prior.

Illinois has erased a significant amount of medical debt. Through the Illinois Medical Debt Relief Program, launched in 2024 in partnership with the nonprofit Undue Medical Debt, the state has eliminated more than $1.1 billion in debt for over 500,000 residents as of early 2026.
