Any old heads here that can explain how big Gang Starr was back in the 90's? I'm 36, started listening to them around 2003 as a kid, but that was already toward the end of their run when The Ownerz came out. Obviously, Preemo was all over the NY rap scene with his production, but I'm curious how Gang Starr was perceived in the rap landscape back then. Never really had an idea of how big they were during their prime.
Im 32 and I remember my pops blasting Gang Starr in the whip when I was a child.
they were never really chart monsters but had that underground king status tbh... hard to earn and daily operation are the ones that made them legends with the backpack crowd. preemo's beats were so in demand that every rapper from nas to jay wanted that sound. influence way outranks the sales with those guys
