I mean, it's still overdesigned. Just because we watch things in HD doesn't mean we HAVE to add detail to every inch of a piece of tech or makeup. It's the same problem I have with the Snyder Batmobile, it has so many angular, reflective, almost...polygonal (?) sections of it you can't tell where to look.

  Yeah, Worf looks just fine in the HD remasters of TNG. You do have to put more effort in some prosthetics, like the bone ridges of the Mimbari often separated from the actors skin and the spikes on Darth Maul has a pretty poor glue job. You easily ignore it on an SD CRT, but not in HD.

I'll admit that it's better than what we actually got, but it still suffers from the same problem; too much in the way of facial prosthetics, which stops the actors from emoting. People think the Klingons' defining trait is their obsession with battle, honour and glory; but they are wrong. The Klingon cultural cliché is actually being a *gigantic ham*, chewing the scenery at every opportunity. Klingons do *everything* big. The Discovery makeup did not let the actors express themselves. And a Klingon that cannot express themselves is no Klingon at all. Fishburne would have been a great Klingon, though.

  Working on a fanfic has really made me appreciate how much Klingons are all theater kids at heart. They're not brutish louts, they're goddamn warrior poets.

  I think SNW’s Klingon makeup is a good compromise. Though it sometimes looks a bit too fake

  Fishburne would have been a great Klingon in the vein of Martok, or even Entak from Enterprise. They aren't making Klingons like that anymore, sadly.

  The Discovery Klingon makeup was designed to completely obscure the actors’ identities. The big reveal with Ash Tyler / Voq wouldn’t have worked with the TNG style makeup or with this concept here. That said, understanding why they changed the makeup and liking it aren’t the same thing. If the story requires a fundamental redesign of an established race, the story is flawed.

  Damn I never thought of it like that. I actually liked the redesign at first. Mostly it just felt like hey now this alien species actually looks alien and very different than just big wavy for heads but you're right that's what makes Klingons Klingons anyway

In terms of fine detail this looks more like a Jem'hadar with human pigmentation than your typical Klingon. I think contemporary producers are forgetting that part of what makes any production work is belief. Klingons look kind of silly in every era of Trek, but when they worked they worked well because they were taken seriously however silly they might look at first glance. There were limits to budgets and design constraints in the past, but the relative lack of those things now doesn't change the basic paradigm that has made Trek work.

I do wonder how *Discovery* would have differed, had Fuller not been let go. Granted, it sounded like it was his own fault, as he was dragging his feet and getting distracted by (at the time) two other shows in various points of development. Plus, I also think CBS was interfering (shocker) because of CBSAA trying to get off the ground. Still, I wonder if Fuller’s vision for the show would have avoided some of the criticisms leveled against the show.

The prosthetics in Discovery made me cringe the most out of any Star Trek show, and I'm glad they're bringing it back to something more classic.
