We’re moving into a new home with a much larger kitchen (yay!). However, as I move stuff in I’m realizing how much I’d gotten used to the smaller space I used for 17 years. For example, in my old kitchen, the sink and stovetop were catty-corner to each other so I would often cook some pasta and then let it drain in a colander that fit across my sink while I did whatever else I needed to do real quick and then I could just grab the colander and dump the pasta back in the pot. In this new house the stove is in it‘s own little corner and probably 15 feet away from the sink and if I did the exact same thing I’d end up dripping water everywhere.
Also in the old kitchen things kind of only had one place they could live and stuff was piled together because it was a relatively tight space. Now I’m going from 3 available drawers for storage to more like 9. I had all my pasta and chips in baskets on top of the fridge and now I’ll have a larger pantry. All my pans for the oven were in one big pile in a cabinet. And so on and so forth.
I’m getting a little lost thinking through new habits and where to store things in this new space. If anyone else moved from a tighter kitchen to a larger space would you mind to share any lessons you learned about organizing the space to be efficient? Where do you store your various utensils, small appliances, ingredients, etc when you have actual separate areas for each kitchen ‘zone’? A slight complication is that I’m short so upper cabinets are always a bit of a challenge for me.
