I don't think he was pretending. Blackbeard is a schemer, but like Luffy, he's also really reckless AND really lucky.
You know that's what I think before too, but reading again the Manga in color and the official release.
He made it looked they got one shotted, and didn't fight Magellan because they have a "mission".

- Appear in the Summit War, and stole Whitebeard's fruit.
He can absorb those poison, like he did with an entire city of one small island, where he fought ace.
But he didn't, he just trusted his luck and the new recruit swordman Shilew to give them the antidote.
