Bruch is my favorite, but you already mentioned that. The first movement is particularly fantastic.
I’m curious if there are any string octets, besides the Mendelssohn, that you like. (For the purposes of this thread, octets with wind instruments do not count. Sphor’s double quartets do count.) I’ve been listening to a number of string octets on YT recently. At the moment, I would say that after Mendelssohn, my favorites are Bruch and Gade. Do you have any other favorites?

Enescu’s octet is my favourite. It’s an amazing work.

Glier wrote a string octet, as did Enescu.
Spohr wrote some fine ones that he called double quartets.

Others that haven't been mentioned yet: Raff's congenial in C major and Bargiel's stormy in C minor. I'm especially fond of the Raff, a work that will surely lift your spirits.
