Apples to Oranges. This dataset was only created in 1992, anything before was coming from a couple of stations that had their records digitized. If you go back to 1850, I bet they did not even have 500 stations total. Nowadays there are hundreds of thousands of weather stations, many of them in parts of the world that were never covered initially.

Honestly this data is likely a misrepresentation of the real world. Not only over time had we just added more stations and warmer areas but there a cycles the world goes through where there are warmer and cooler periods. Would be cooler to see the science stations only from the beginning with no new ones added for a slightly better representation...
You can see those cycles quite clearly while the overall temperature raises. By the end of the graph there is a marked increase in the average cold weather temperatures while hot/cold cycles are still present. This is a clear demonstration of global warming and climate change.
The fact that your sentence starts with “Honestly” and “likely” means the whole thing can be disregarded.
The natural trend right now should be a slight cooling one. Nothing we are seeing is explainable by natural processes alone. The concept of global warming is really easy to see, it’s impossible for this to be a conspiracy. We know the exact effect greenhouse gasses have on the atmosphere. We have an exact record of greenhouse gas concentration over the last several thousand years from ice cores. We have an exact record of modern CO2 change. There is only a single source for the massive increase in CO2.
You’re misinterpreting the graph. It isn’t showing actual temperatures—it is showing *changes in temperature from the station’s first reading*. So adding another station in a warm climate doesn’t skew the graph towards a warming trend, since we are examining if the station *itself* is observing hotter or cooler temperatures than what it had itself observed previously. As for the world’s hotter and cooler periods—the chart makes no statement as to WHY a hotter trend is being observed, but scientifically we know it’s anthropogenically caused based on other available data and research.

These scientists aren't accounting for inflation. 5C back in 1850 is only 2.2C now.

Let me preface this by saying global warming is real and worsening. It is a problem we need to address now. However, I do believe the chart is misleading. While temperature variability has increased over time, the places with the least people, also the hottest and coldest places on Earth are typically the most likely to be getting more weather monitoring systems, as they are more likely to be neglected beforehand. This would be easily fixed if every weather station started at 0 on the chart and you just measured the change in temperature rather than the absolute temperature. It's misleading otherwise.

💯 Yeah considering 1850-2026 is not even a fraction of a second on geological time, nor planet life. Basing global warming on such a microscopic sample is so narcissistic of humanity it boggles the mind. Yeah we may toast ourselves as a species, but the but the Earth will be just fine until either the Sun engulfs it in 2 billion years, or it gets hit by an asteroid significant enough to destroy it. this is most likely warming cycle as the earth has done plenty of times before we even crawled out of the water. Now I’m not saying pollute the hell out of it, and we should be more mindful for our own sake as a species, but to say we alone would damage it is arrogant at best. There was a time the Earth was covered in greenhouse gases (much like Venus is now) with temperatures far beyond what is habitable for millions of years and guess what, the Earth did just fine cause we here typing on a screen giving our opinions.

Go find a manga written by Boichi (the creator of Dr. Stone) called "Hotel" just the first story. It's called Hotel. The first chapter is about a giant hotel built to stand as a monument and contains the DNA information for every living thing on the plant. The story literally opens with a scientist explaining to world leaders that it's already too late for the earth, that "Pandora's Box that is Global Warming has been opened and cannot be closed" Mankind was left with only maybe 250 hears left before the atmosphere's temperature reaches 100C and the oceans, lakes and rivers will boil off and a runaway greenhouse effect ends all life on the planet. Honestly, I feel we're already at that moment and there and rich people don't care enough to do anything about it. Because they're literally the ONLY ones with the power to do anything. But they're too focused on making themselves rich. Out generation may not die out and be the last. But we're gonna see that sharp decline and in maybe 4 generations it'll be over.

Yeah this is not a really reliable metric of trend. Because where are these stations being added? I imagine you pre-1970 there was more in North America, Europe. And then as technology got better they started adding a lot more around the equator. And as you add more stations you get more data the bars get thicker. But where those stations are being added can shift the temperature average over time. So this doesn't say anything.
