people chose that car because it’s the top in efficiency/price and you already know it is expected to have its software supported for years
That and you didn't have to deal with dealer bs
Model Y picked us up for airport trip this morning. I’ve been in a Model Y a handful times recently for Ubers and each time I just think ‘why would anyone choose this over R2, iX3, or the EX60? The spartan interior was cool a decade ago but now it feels old and dated. It’s too small for a family vehicle. I’m really shocked Tesla interiors feel pretty much the same as my old 2019 M3P.

It’s not as cheap as it used to be, but it’s still cheaper than an iX3 or EX60. Not sure what an R2 costs. Also if the driver can’t charge at home Tesla is probably the convenience option
$60k for the only available R2 though they're targeting $45k for a future cheap trim.
Wat
It’s not too small for a family vehicle. We have an obscene view of what we need.
Wife still thinks she needs a 5 seater. All the kids are out of the house.
Cost and availability. Access to service and access to superchargers makes a lot of sense for an Uber driver.
all of this is just opinion
I own two non-Tesla EVs. But Tesla does a couple of things extremely well: 1) Efficiency. Teslas are the most efficient EVs out there. 2) Charging network. Set your destination and relax. It just... works. I don't make enough long distance trips to justify the price premium you pay for those things.
Compared to what OP posted, it's cheaper. Generally speaking, you don't pay a price premium for Teslas for what you get, at least in the US. They tend to be competitive and have forced the competition to drop their prices and give us more options.
Not sure about the efficiency statement. I’m getting 4.6 to 5.2 miles/kW on a regular basis in my Kia.
I own a Tesla and a Hyundai EV, the Hyundai is way more efficient then the Tesla so not sure where you are getting that. The major differences that set the Y a part are yes the charging network, the software, and FSD
Teslas are not the most efficient EVs out there. That would be lucid
It’s the value option. Not surprising it’s being used for Uber and not surprising it’s not the most comfortable.
Was it a Juniper or the old one? The Juniper 2025+ (you can tell if it has the light bar in the front and rear screen) is better but still minimal compared to the original ones. Being an Uber I would guess it’s an older one so it would be essentially the same as the 2019 Model 3.
My serious question is do two 76 year old have the reaction time to go from just watching the car drive to taking over when not if it makes a serious mistake. This is actually a much harder task then driving actively and then reacting to a situation unfolding as your already engaged with what's happening around you much more heavily. This is honestly the most dangerous part of limited automation.
lol, you’d think my Bolt EV is too small to be a family vehicle, but it’s not. A Kei car can be a family vehicle, you just carry too much stuff.
It really depends on what you do as a family. We have a smaller EV for daily use and I’ve kept my Highlander Limited for hauling surfboards to the beach and hockey gear to games. Eventually I’ll probably want an R1S or similar sized EV SUV but I can’t justify the cost atm since the Toyota works great and is paid off.
Fun fact: the bolt euv has a larger cabin than the model Y.
We do smaller day trips or even overnight ones in my Honda N One e (Japan, kei EV). It's just fine. Still have a baby so most of the trunk is a stroller. Once the baby is fully done with stroller we'd have even more space as a family of 4. Though we're most likely replacing our current bigger ICE vehicle with an EV next year.
The whole post is subjective. "I rode in an XYZ and didn't like it" goes for just about any car.
My wife, our two teenagers and I do fine with our Bolt EV, even hauling home a Costco grocery run!
I own a Mini— and am keenly appreciative of how few design changes they have had. I don’t want a vehicle as a fashion accessory. Other makers constantly change their designs to make existing models look old and dated to promote buying new vehicles— and to reduce values of used stock. Consumers are the loosers here
/u/roux_my_burgundy - price. A Model Y can be bought way cheaper than any of those 3.
Why wouldn’t they work for three?
Model Y (Premium) starts at 65k in canada… iX3 starts at 75k (with more money if you want glass roof, rear seat heating, etc) I can’t deny iX3’s insane range though, that thing slaps
Because an iX3 with decent options is 90kCAD and a Model Y premium AWD is 65kCAD. Simple as that.
It's a hilariously bad ride. Either they didn't bother engineering a suspension or it's more energy efficient to feel every tiny bump.
Does Y's active suspension improve matters significantly?
It makes sense for a taxi since its cost and efficiency is the main driver https://preview.redd.it/uxojzlhzlrgh1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=092490f640fa46f3428c86dcc140b301934ac1e0
Thinking that a Model Y is too small to be a family vehicle sounds certainly very American.
It’s a significantly better vehicle all around. For the size of the vehicle the packaging is excellent, it’s the efficiency king, road trips are effortless with superchargers, software is the clear winner, app is incredible, FSD is unmatched by a long shot; not a single close competitor in the US, daily driving one everything just works and is extremely intuitive after initial setup. The real question is why would anyone buy any other option in this price segment. It seems the masses agree given its sales numbers compared to any other EV. There’s just no comparison for what you get for the money and on many features, what you get at any price point. It’s by far the best daily driver for the majority of people.
Yup my 26 Model Y Premium AWD is an absolute dream in all aspects. Best car I’ve ever owned. Hypothetically If I was given any of those cars OP listed for free and I didn’t already own the Model Y I would immediately sell it for the Model Y lol.
A decade ago your EV choices were Model X/S or something that gave you less than 100 miles of range in the US. We’ve made a bit of a jump since then.
I was unimpressed with the 3 and Y, and assumed the S and X were much better. Had a X Uber last year and was unimpressed. It was an upgrade from the Y, but not a $100K interior.
You hit the nail on the head with Tesla's problems. Aside from Elon's idiocy, their main problem is the cars are old and stale. They are all in deep need of a serious refresh.
It felt so familiar getting in. That’s a bad thing.
I don’t think they are planning to be making cars much longer. The current cars were engineered years ago and many of the top talent have left the company. There was a recent WSJ article about Elon notifying their executive team that they are planning to sell the China business so Tesla could merge with SpaceX. That plant is 50% of their global production.
Tesla is kinda the “it just works” of auto. The software and app actually add to the experience instead of get in the way. Also preference. The spartan interior just feels clean and uncluttered. Last thing, and this is changing for the worse since the model y standard came out, the standard features are much better than the standard features on other brands.
Model Ys tech is still above any other EV. Plus the brand recognition for better or worse. For people casually interested in EVs they think of Tesla, not Hyundai or Rivian if they even know what Rivian is. When I got my model 3 a big reason was the tech features available even in the base model, which for most if not all EVs I could only get on the top trim if at all. Plus, the more established history and stronger reliability made me feel more secure in my purchase being that it was my first EV. I definitely concede that the worst part of the car is the build quality and ride comfort, those are things that at least in my 2023 Model 3 Tesla is well behind in (idk about the newer models, haven’t driven them). But when putting it altogether to me and I would guess a lot of other people Tesla is the safer option, hence they sell more.
"It's too small for a family vehicle" dude what are you on?
And before that statement they listed three vehicles that are the same size class as Model Y. Not every family needs a three-row behemoth SUV.
Maybe he has a really fat family?
The new ones are apparently much nicer. They’re alls not optimized for back seat riding, they’re all about the front seats. Also, I’ve been in the dozens of times and you’re 100% right.
I’ve been in 2 different Junipers. They are nicer but that’s a low bar. I was shocked and disappointed at the refresh.
Teslas seem perfect for taxis. But one of our retirement hobbies is road-tripping and I can’t see spending hours in it. And the design aesthetic is purely personal. My house has artwork, comfortable chairs, etc. my son’s house looks and feels like a Tesla interior- he’d be very at-home in it.
This is a key point lost in the efficiency arguments. If you’re road tripping, comfort is way more important than saving 15-30 minutes charging. The comfortable vehicle is almost always the superior option. I had a M3P with FSD. I hated taking it on trips because I’d arrive to stuff and sore.
Try to compare the price. Then you will understand.
It’s all about the charging network… that’s why people buy the model Y. Tesla nailed the charging network and now they are running away with the sales volume because the legacy OEMs waffled about on coming up with a solution and then eventually just switched to piggybacking onto the superchargers. So now all these other EVs are crowding the chargers having to park awkwardly and take up 2 spots.
Yes I agree that the interior looks and feel dated. I prefer the Mercedes interior with the extra wide display more.
The reasons are quite simple. You listed two luxury vehicles that cost more and the R2 is barely available.
The spartan interior was cool a decade ago but now it feels old and dated.
I no longer own a Tesla nor do I plan to purchase one for the foreseeable future, but I’ve always found this criticism about them weird.
No auto manufacturer is creating a whole new look for their vehicles (interior or exterior) every year or even every five years for that matter. Name a car brand and their interiors today pretty much look the same as they did a decade ago absent a few changes in materials and bigger screens.
It’s called “design language” and it’s the same reason why every iPhone looks the same as does every MacBook, iPad, Surface Tablet, and the list goes on.
It just seems weird to me that people nitpick this about Tesla when pretty much every company does this.
It’s a problem because the interior fit and finish from 6 years ago looks like the fit and finish from a Tesla 15 years ago.
Because with exception to the R2 thats only $5k more those vehicles start where the Tesla ends in MSRP. You can get a fully loaded Model Y for \~$57k, meanwhile the iX3 starts at $61,500 and the EX60 starts at $58,400. Of course I’m sure those aren’t equivalent to the base Y but it’s not gonna be that far, and especially if you don’t care about that stuff makes it a hard sell (plus higher MSRP regardless of whats included always leads to sticker shock, thats mostly why everyone thinks EVs cost more when they’re really just better equipped). The R2 is also a brick that absolutely guzzles juice. Inside EV calculated it did 2.83 mi/kWh in their 70mph test, vs the Ys 4.13 mi/kWh so if you do a lot of highway or just want better efficiency the Y becomes quite appealing.
TIL that the cabin is apparently…. behind the rear seats 😂 (Just so you know, cabin is the seating area, not the trunk)
That is why you have options and people can choose what they want. I don’t know what is there to discuss here.
We’re discussing why people would choose one when there are other options
model 3 and y are basically the ev version of the toyota camry and rav 4.
Corolla and RAV4 but you’re right. I never considered that. My dad loves his Y but he drove a CRV forever. He’s a simple fella
Price. People with money will buy the superior alternatives. It’s like asking why someone buys a Corolla.
Nah I personally much prefer the clean minimalist interior of my Juniper Model Y Premium - and I thought I would hate it initially. Going back to non-Teslas feel cluttered and busy with all the knobs, buttons, etc. Hypothetically if each of the cars you listed were the same price (or even cheaper) than the Model Y I would still get the Model Y no question lol.
Until someone comes up with a good FSD competitor, I’m sticking with Tesla. As for the interior, ours fine fit my family of three. Your point about it being like your 2019 is spot on. They need to do a model refresh.
There's really no such thing as too small for a family vehicle. Everyone thinks they need a big-ass three row SUV because they have two kids and maybe a dog, but I had friends with Cavaliers or K-Cars for "family vehicles" back when I was growing up. My parents had two sedans that were slightly larger than that, but not by much. One of them even had a bench seat and we crammed 6 people in there pretty regularly. I'll agree that the 3/Y have pretty spartan interiors, and back when the 3 debuted first I thought they showed a styling buck with an unfinished placeholder interior. I was pretty interested in them back then until I saw the interior and it was an instant deal killer. I'm not sure how anyone willingly puts up with the lack of proper gauge cluster, and they didn't even make an attempt to integrate the touchscreen into the dash design. It's just tacked on like an afterthought.
People choose Model Y over those cars because it’s a better offering. Simple as that. The features to price ratio just can’t be beat. Also FSD… I’m not going to buy a car without some for of self driving from now on. Rivian system looks promising, I hope they pull it off.
