Wait wait wait, are you saying the market is free and people can choose to accept or reject whichever offers they want?! And the ones who are willing to do it for less get more jobs?! That's unheard of! It's as if the market is self-correcting and making sure everyone benefits the most. It's crazy how people think they're so smart and virtuous while not understanding basic economics. Wage of drivers/employees going up is not necessarily a good thing (don't get me wrong, I'm all for them making more money) - for example if there was only one driver in the city and Uber had to pay him $500 a ride and subsidize the drive for the passenger.. Uber would quickly leave that city and EVERYONE will lose in the long term. Not to mention the obvious.. if you are so concerned about the money your driver makes then you are free to leave them a $200 tip. But you won't.

In case of monopsony that would mean extracting all worker's surplus. Meaning it wouldn't matter for them if they are employed or not because they gain nothing from employment. Which is extremely bleak existence - if we consider that for many not being employed means homelessness or even starvation. I am not sure how one in the right mind can advocate for that.

Uber Eats and DoorDash workers in New York City have missed out on hundreds of millions of dollars due to how the apps collect tips, according to a new report released by the city on Tuesday.
The New York City Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (DCWP) estimated that the app's tipping processes in the city have deprived gig delivery workers of $550 million since December 2023. That was the month that New York City's minimum pay law for delivery workers took effect.
Around the same time, Uber Eats and DoorDash shifted the option for New York City customers to leave a tip only after placing an order.

I mean this was happening pre-AI. It's just cheaper and easier to do with AI, so more companies are going to take advantage of wage suppression which this MAGA government is more than happy to support.

Not really, if you call it Machine Learning (pre-chatGPT) it was best fit lines on matrix data (imagine a best fit through a randomly populated cube that’s x-y-z planes but matrices can do n planes) and that kind of breakthrough/aha moment. Also how Google Maps finds you the best route. I hate corporate greed :(

Doctorow's Platform Decay/Enshittification concept is one of the more important and enlightening concepts put forth in the last 10-20 years. However, I think this is a narrow view of one aspect of AI. What executives want to do with AI will not necessarily determine the outcome of AI, and any artificial general intelligence or beyond should be assumed to have its own interests. Platform decay is not something I would expect an artificial general intelligence to want to pursue, at least with the myopia of executives.
This is not plaftorm decay / enshittificatiom. This is perfectly applied price discrimination, to your own workforce. You CS people just made up a word for a concept long established.
Rather than learn a trade or seek a job, why not start your own business and use AI to solve a problem you care about? Isn't that where the real opportunity lies for everyone?

How dare a business refine it's method of offering contracts... If you don't want the job at the price maybe don't take the job. If there's a social problem with business getting better at paying as little as possible to workers to do the job what is it? Do people have to take that particular job? Get another job if you don't like it. If there aren't other jobs for you the government could make a point to always have something for people to do at a living wage. I don't see a problem in Uber getting better at getting drivers to agree to jobs at the lowest price.
