What’s the difference between anti consumption & buying it for life?

Shouldn’t the aim be to buy less junk you don’t need? Instead of being anti material?

Example:

Bobby is looking for kitchen scissors. They see cheap mass produced scissors with plastic handles and soft edges. They also see custom made Japanese scissors with hand-ground convex designs and high hardiness.

Bobby can either reject the scissors and just use the knife he has at home. It’s a perfectly fine knife. Or bobby can invest in some high quality scissors which would make his life a bit easier.

Why would bobby not buy the scissors instead of having to use a knife (which requires a cutting board, is hard to cut noodles, lettuce etc) for everything?

I'm confused. Are people saying we shouldn't buy basic home tools? A knife and scissors have very different uses.

  People are poor. People are minimalist AND anti consumption and simply don’t care to “have a full set” when they’re getting along just fine as they are.

Buy it for life is about buying good quality products once rather than having to repeatedly buy lower quality products. Anti-consumption is about not buying something you actually don't need For example, if I buy an awesome cheese grater that is gonna last me for centuries, but I don't eat cheese and I actually never used it, I might have bought it for life but I wouldn't consider it anti-consumption

if he needs the scissors he can buy them. if it's a one time cut he can do with the knife then use the knife. but if you like clipping newspapers and coupons and cutting labels off things a pair of good scissors and a scissor sharpener is fine. even better if theyre secondhand.

I'd say both sides of the same coin. If you buy something once with the intention of using it a long time and not replacing it, you are in fact consuming less.

I think you just need to use common sense. Are you going to scrape your fingernails on the pavement so you don't need to buy or have a nail clipper? No, that's ridiculous. Buying nail clippers is not wasteful and frivolous. BUT, you can be thoughtful about how you get some. You could buy really good ones and keep them for a long time, or maybe your mom/friend has several pairs that accumulated over the years and you ask for one of them.

I think they’re applicable for different kinds of products. For example, BIFL means I try to buy clothes that are good quality / pure cotton etc from places that offer alterations and repairs, instead of cheap clothes from big stores that fray or shrink or fade after months of wear. Anti Consumption would be me choosing NOT to buy the puma speedcats because I already have a pair of sneakers that are fine, I don’t need a new one just cause they’re cute and trendy. In your example whether Bobby does or doesn’t buy the scissors depends on how often he might use them. Like if you eat sliced bread often / daily you may benefit from a toaster even though you could toast bread in a pan / oven. You probably don’t need a dedicated apple corer or any of the other random kitchen gadgets that go around. Ideally you need to consider your requirements and quality of life (buy what you need), and avoid buying things you already own or won’t get full use out of, and when you do buy something, pick an option that’ll last you forever (either v good quality or can be easily repaired)

Anti consumption and bifl are two different concepts that can compliment each other. They are not the same though. You can very much by only bifl and lead a very consumerist lifestyle. As someone who is anti consumption buying bifl is a great option to consume less.

They are complementary. Don’t buy what you don’t need. When you do need something, buy a quality version of it that probably won’t need to be replaced in six months.

You could look at the community info to get an idea of what this sub is. Probably the most important difference is that anticonsumerism isn't just about your personal shopping habits at all. It's a whole sociopolitical ideology.
