[Superheroes] why do villains target trains so much?

It seems like every superhero movie has the hero defend or stop trains. What is it about trains? What do they get out of derailing trains and such? like every hero media content includes them. even separate franchises like incredibles and miraculous ladybug always involve trains

Re: Train scene from Invincible. Trains are compact and full of people. If a supervillain wishes to be very diabolical, they can jeopardize a train which results in the deaths of dozens of people. That is my guess.

Because trains carry tons of people at a time and they're a relatively volatile mode of transportation in terms of how easy they'd be to derail. So it's an easy way to force the hero's hand and make them prioritize saving the train so the villain can either escape easier or beat on the hero while they're distracted.

The main benefit of robbing/attacking a train is that it’s on tracks, so you know it’s going to be exactly where it’s supposed to be and it can’t evade you. Every other answer would be extremely Doylist, so that’s what I’ve got.

Because they can not he stopped quickly. You can see exactly where they are going to go and they can not turn to avoid it. So it makes a very easy cause and effect situation where a hero has to intervene to save lives, while still giving time for the show/comic to show the 'look' and reaction of those involved.

Sometimes the train is the target. Sometimes it had something worth stealing. Sometimes destroying it cripples infrastructure. Sometimes it’s a giant hostage bundle. Sometimes the bellend damages it because forcing the hero to save everyone buys thirty seconds of escape time. And sometimes some poor commuter service has merely wandered into the blast radius of people who can throw buildings at one another. From the villain’s perspective, though, the attraction is obvious. A train arrives when expected, follows a fixed path, carries a lot of people and becomes extremely difficult to save once something goes wrong. For anyone whose plan begins with, make the asshole in bright spandex stop chasing me, public transport is doing an extraordinary amount of the planning for free.

In those superhero universes trains are the one stop shop for all the villainous wants.

They're valuable. They can be transporting valuable cargo or important people. The train on it's own represents lots of value monetarily. Infrastructure is worth a lot. Moving gold, jewelry, tech, celebrities, or hell, just ransom the train itself. Paying several million to a guy in the mask makes way more sense than paying billions over a decade to rebuild a span of a rail line.

Hostages & damages galore. Train filled with unimportant people? No, it's filled with innocent civilians. Filled with important people? Better. Filled with both? That's a double win right there. A train is also tons of moving mass that can do lots of collateral damage.

It's hard (in general) for people to respond to this. Sometimes a villain wants a closed environment. A train can serve as that if you isolate it and/or make it seem like everything is normal. Long distances between stations, trains in remote isolated regions, and the broad inaccessibility to a high speed moving transport can make for ideal villainy.

Hard to ignore. Train is targeted by a villain that wants attention? They pick one a train that services a large area and transports lots. That means where the train started from, where it's going, everything in between needs to be shut down for safety. That means the whole train system gets thrown into chaos. That means tons of new coverage. Concern for people, infrastructure, economics, political appearance, it all happens in one unique package.

Also tradition. Superheroes came into being in their modern form when cars were still in their infancy. Trains are predictable and at the time were the most reliable and fastest way to travel. Sometimes you just want to tie a damsel to a railway track and listen to their screams as the train goes choo choo ever closer, and twirl your moustache

If you pick a train with stops far enough away from each other, in a remote enough area, you've basically got a captive victim pool that may not have enough cellular reception to call for help. Planes require too much disclosure of who you are. And your exit strategy's gonna be real tricky. Buses can stop anywhere and they run out of gas. But trains go through some really desolate areas. And it takes forever to stop them. If you're trying to kidnap someone or rob a lot of people, the train is probably an easy way to get in, get what you want, and get out before the cops can get at you.

Beyond what the others have said, there's a bunch of ingrained information that just naturally pops up - where it's going, who is on it, what cargo it holds. It's also a relatively self-contained ecosystem - if the target is someone with an entourage, the villain may not know which of the SUVs they're in, but can be certain that they are in fact on the train.

Because of all of that information, trains make for amazing fake-outs for a villain. Because the heros are expected to use the train information to get ahead of the villain, proving them wrong with such a large object (and group of people) is incredibly powerful. As the heros lie in wait, here comes...
