Countertop basil plant not an option?
I have zero skills with plants...
Man, it's crazy. A few leaves of basil cost $2.49. I wonder if it's even more expensive than drugs. I love basil, but I don't know how to afford it. And yeah, not everybody lives in a house with their own garden 😄

You don't need a garden to grow basil. Just a bowl and some dirt.
Heck, just a bowl and water. Basil propagates and grows fine in just water.
Yeah, I saw a basil plant on the discount rack at Lowe's and snagged it. Looked pretty limp. Soaked it and planted it, thinking, "why not?' This thing will not stop growing. I harvest it. Dry it out. Store it. I have two jars full now. And I finally just let it go to seed for the pollinators.
Plus a window for sun!
I have never found basil was easy to grow at rate one would like basil to be available. A little pot of herbs, if you can just get the darn thing not to die, is enough to harvest once for a dish, or otherwise you are just getting a garnish every so often from a leaf or two. 🙃 I don't usually have a black thumb. I can get balcony tomatoes to the point of breaking even on dirt, pots and stakes, and keep lots of house plants going. But lettuce and basil in particular are my white whales.

Get an indoor hydroponic system and grow it yourself. Aerogarden and Letpot are two decent brands but there are others. I recommend getting a better brand though because the lights on some of the cheap ones aren't as bright and it won't grow as well. I never buy basil in stores.

Or any ethnic market, really. Iranian cuisine is *very* herb heavy, and you can get great deals at Iranian markets as well if you have any by you.
Yes. I get fistfuls of basil at HMart for around $5.
It is very easy to grow on a windowsill.

Basil will grow indoors in a pot reasonably well, especially if you're careful when pruning off a few leaves to use here and there. Being a leafy plant, not a vegetable, you don't have to worry about flowering and pollenation, just make sure it's near a window and gets a few hours of sun every day. My other trick is to take your fresh basil and chop it (or use a food processor), mix it with oil, and freeze it into cubes. The oil helps protect it during freezing, so you get a pretty fresh basil taste when you toss a basil cube into a sauce or soup later on. Good way to take advantage of a big harvest or good sale on fresh basil.

My local smaller markets/grocery stores that aren't chains sell big bunches of local basil for a couple bucks (Canadian dollars) and it's the only way I'll but it otherwise it's not worth it at all
I use an aerogarden. Not that expensive and very low maintenance.
Seconding aerogarden or any hydroponic growing system, they work great and are worth the cost up front. Get a small system and you can have fresh countertop basil the whole year, or any herb really.
Put a stem in a small glass of water. When it has roots then transfer it to a planter. I'm 85. My Mother did it all the time to get something growing. Always something on a window sill.
That's the rule of motherhood, something always growing in the windowsill. ♡

I get it from a local farm stand or sometimes in my CSA share! Where I live, that’s a way better deal than grocery store basil.
What are you using it for? Just started a garden this year and I've got way more basil than I know what to do with. Going to try and use a bunch for fresh pesto this week.

I buy seeds and grow it. Herbs are some of the most costly things that you can grow. Basil can also be propagated in water! Snip a branch off, put it in a bud vase, it will grow roots, and you can plant it creating a whole new plant.
I grow it myself in a pot on my balcony.
You could even do basil micro greens. Takes 2-3 weeks and not a lot of skill required.
Someone dropped off a plant and it wont die. Thirsty thing just lives in a bottle of water.

I buy the potted basil from Trader Joe’s and keep it in my kitchen window.
I grow mine under a light inside. As it starts to mature up and out I start a new plant
From the half keg I cut in half to make two planters. They live in my driveway next to the plastic planters with my Thai basils varities
My daughter’s friend 😂 her mom dropped us off a huuuge bunch and now we want to start growing our own. As others said, a small pot and some soil is all is needed. If you have no sunlight, there are UV lamps from Amazon available for cheap (or ask on your local Buy Nothing group for the light!)
I have a pot of basil sitting next to my front door. It's not a huge pot but it works well enough for when I just need a few leaves. When I want more, there's the local farmer's market where I can buy enormous bags of basil
I plant about 8 plants every spring. The bees love them & I get basil too.
I tried to grow basil and only one stem survived the process so it's doable. Now it's growing and thriving
Basil will Take over the word and thrives on being neglected. Even the worst plant person can keep basil alive as long as it’s in the full sun.

My grocery sells entire basil plants for about three dollars. I can’t keep them alive for more than a month or two for the life of me but it’s a good amount of basil for three bucks!

Get some seeds and grow it on your windowsill. Easy to grow.
I replanted the Trader Joe's basil plant and it continues to provide!

Basil is 80% of the reason I have a garden. 😂 It goes bad so quickly when I buy it. As others have said, a little pot of dirt is fine for some basil. I've found it to be a pretty easy plant to grow.

Buy one of those $2.50 Basil plants that have the roots in the foam base and plant it. Breakup the foam base and pop it in some decent soil and water. Basil for days. Checkout youtube videos if you want more info on it
Split that plant at least three ways, out in three different pots or all three in a largish pot. Get it in natural sunlight, water but don't over water. Once a main stem gets about 3-4 inches high, remove any of the teeny tiny double leaves that appear. It will make the plant split into two branches in that place, doubling future leaves.
You can grow it in a single pot very very easily. No garden or large plot of land required. Mine is in a single pot and it's out of control like 80% of the time

You can even grow it without soil. This is “Keep On Growin’” on YouTube. Mike has many other great, informative videos on doing this on the cheap. Windowsill is fine for basil. But I made a setup with low cost LED shoplights for starting seeds, so I’ll be starting lettuce and kale soon. I wish I had started earlier, but I’ve had health issues.
Fortunately, I threw a huge amount of seeds outside our apartment in the shared raised bed here. Thought they were flower seeds I saved. Turned out to be basil. Lucky me!

I grew basil in a pot when I lived in an apartment. You just need sun and a big enough pot that it will be OK with 1 good watering a day.
Basil is stupid easy to grow in a pot. Like, really really easy. And if you let it go to seed and spread the seeds, you get neverending basil.
There’s a great Thai restaurant where I used to live and the owner grows his basil in pots on the sidewalk in front of the entrance lol

I have a couple of selfwatering planters that I grow basil in in my window sill every summer. The plants become huge as long as I keep the roots humid, fertilise regularly, and nip the leaves to make the plants bushier. I freeze the leaves in olive oil so I have fresh basil all winter.
You can grow a small pot of basil in your house.
