They're being induced by hurricanes in the Eastern Pacific which are being fed by the El Niño conditions. The ocean temp is 70° here, which is unheard of for Pacific coast beaches.
What a badass. As a former lifeguard, I can attest that it isn’t easy dragging someone to safety, regardless of their size. To successfully get this kid to shore while fighting those waves is impressive.

Can confirm. I swam a kid out of the water who was about that size and was exhausted. And it was just a normal day out. Nothing like that wash.
The surf in SoCal is no joke right now. There are several hurricanes in the Pacific causing powerful surf, especially in HB.
This is in santa cruz ca. those waves and currents are brutal especially with the storms.

He wasn't in the water. He was on the beach and the water came in very quickly pretty far past where it had been.
There is a longer video of this. It was intensely anxiety-inducing. That teen is a hero twice over, once for saving the kid and once for turning everyone else away, preventing more rescues. He’s trained- they aren’t. And props to the helpers who actually listened when he told them to go back. He knew what to do and how, it was just going to take a while to get out of the surf. He had to go under the waves where it’s less turbulent but he never let go of the boy. This should be shown to every tourist before they set foot on the beach. We don’t say “never turn your back on the ocean” for nothing. This is what the ocean will do to you. Protect your kids. Ruin their fun. Stay away from the surf.
Were the parents arrested? Because the parents should be arrested for child neglect.
I think a LOT of tourists or newer residents don't have any idea how much wilder the west coast beaches can be than the east coast beaches. My experience *is* limited, but I grew up in California in beach towns. I was told from VERY young (7 years at the eldest) to be careful, not go in over my knees, and mom watched me like a hawk when I was small when we were at the beach. I went to visit CT when I was 25, and I was *utterly amazed* at how wide, flat, and placid the beaches were there. It's incomprehensible how different they are if you haven't seen it for yourself. Even if you did grow up a resident, if you've never been to the beach, you have no way of knowing how dangerous and frightening those waves can be.

I was here for this. The waves were absolutely fucking insane. Many point out the stupidity of the kid being in the water, but they don't realize the surf moved in *very* quickly and overwhelmed a lot of people. Everyone had to move their stuff within a minute before the waves covered where people once were lying around. I don't even think he was swimming, just playing on the beach.
The distance those waves cover just inside the video frame is insane. You think they're almost free of the surf and at the shoreline *multiple times* only for a massive wave to completely engulf them once again.
When was this? If recent we should 1000% bomb his employer with compliments
Fuckin kudos to this lifeguard, but 16 is way too young to be responsible for the lives of anyone else.
Based on results, it’s not too young. It is however a social failure that he’s only getting paid a few dollars above some other job that doesn’t require the risk of death.

Honestly the best thing they did was listen when the lifeguard told them to go back and stop trying to help since they aren't trained and would just create the need for more rescues, it was just going to take a while for the trained guy and the kid to methodically get out
16 year old life guard? Bro was an absolute beast taking those waves head on but I'd think that this sort of profession would require 18 or older. Deserves a raise for that one....WTF is with those waves? Was he carried somewhere he shouldn't have been?
In Australia we have them under 18 but they’re not fully fledged till 18…maybe this kid is like that? But either way, some boys of 16 are more than capable as this one proves.

This happened at Seabright beach in Santa Cruz. The lifeguards there are employed by California State Parks. All you need to be eligible to try out for that department is a driver's license, so it's pretty common for teenagers to be working the towers on California beaches.
There is nothing magical about being 18. In fact, a 16 year old varsity swimmer in peak condition is an ideal lifeguard.
What a brave young man! And all those who ran to help! I dont know if I would/could do it (I dont know how to swim :/) but man, this is bravery.
Not being able to swim is exactly why you *shouldn't*. All those guys who went out to help could have become more bodies needing rescue. Those waves were big enough to knock grown men off their feet and down the beach. Good thing they actually listened to the life guard and backed off a bit.

Jesus Christ, 16 is so so young. To risk your life like that someone else’s at that age is just unreal to me, I feel like that’s a lot to put on the shoulders of someone so young.

I was 16y old when I visited California, I'm from Europe. It was the first time I saw the pacific ocean, the beach had no end in sight. I went in and behaved like I normally would at home. But I was not prepared for this, the waves took me under several times. They kept tumbling me and I thought I was going to drown. Luckily there was a surfer who got me out. Those waves in the clip are insane. All that force and energy....

Grew up in the midwest, but been in South Carolina for years, been to California a few times and Hawaii. East coast waves, unless there is a storm, are pretty mild, west coast waves get ferocious, Hawaii the waves are good, but the under currant is what will drag you out to sea. This kid did exactly the right thing here. He was clearly working with the water while holding onto the kid. He didnt fight it, but took his time to fall into it and make forward progress. Dude knew what he was doing. Props to him too for telling others off to not endanger his position or theirs.
I wonder if he’ll guest star in the new Baywatch series. Be a good way to give him some recognition by letting him play himself in a cameo of a tv series.

That is crazy!! I'd never never never get close to waves on a day like that. I was once a lifeguard. I have learned to just stay away from these types of days. We'd have closed the beach.

I live 1/8 mile from this beach. It's a big wall wave on virtually man-made beach (formed by the dredging of the harbor over many decades) and on big days can form insane rip currents that pound a slanted shoreline.
That kid is done for. You can see it on his face. He had nothing left. That boy would be dead if not for the lifeguards.
