[IWantOut] 26F doctor in Switzerland -> US, Canada, UK

Currently hold a medical degree and in my 2nd year of residency in internal medicine.

The US and Canada are much more complex if I want to pursue this the medical field.

But I really don't mind transitioning out of medicine if it means that I can leave Switzerland. I feel stuck and fkr personal reasons, feel very claustrophobic.

Is it possible to do anything else (pharma, consultancy, public health) and move to any bigger cities in the US, Canada or the US ?

I speak English at a native level.

Canada is recruiting foreign doctors (those with European education and experience are at the top of the list) for underserviced areas. This one is for the Province of Ontario. https://www.ontariohealth.ca/news/practice-ready-ontario Each province has their own standard. Some programs are faster than others.

You are going to do fine. My suggestion is to take a long visit to the US. Visit a couple of your target cities and walk in to the HR departments at places you believe you might like to work This would never work for most people, but the MD will really help. Where are you interested in moving? Also, if you don't walk a lot start. I am not a doctor, but I believe the use of mechanical transportation has confused us all about the physical scale of the world. I am sure you have many good reasons for wanting to move but claustrophobia should not be one. Best Wishes

You can prob come to Canada. Just need to register degree, maybe write some exam, might have to do another residency, but I'd be very surprised if you couldn't get to Canada. Also, do you speak french? If so, stop reading and start applying to Quebec.

Canada currently has a fast-tracked immigration stream explocitly for medical professionals specifically. Visit this site for guides, help and volunteer support on your move depending on where in Canada you want to end up.

Hahaha, I hear you! In the same position myself, absolutely tired of Switzerland and its provincial outlook on life. Mid thirties guy who wants to actually live life again even if it means giving up cushy finance life. I happen to have multiple passports including British but honestly I'm not sure UK is much of a step up. Canada is slightly better but also has numerous problems. The real deal is the USA. If you find an answer to that please let me know! :)

Either finish your training or see if you can finish residency in your preferred country. Speaking as a US physician, it's difficult to get sponsored for a visa without clinical experience in the US. But it's possible. And it's an easier path than trying to get licensed after finishing training abroad. Canada and the UK have pathways for european-credentialed doctors but the pay is much lower. The UK is more likely to put you in or near a major city though, Canada is massive so you may land quite far away from the nearest city.

Hi! Speaking as a American resident but citizen of U.S./CH/CA. I had to comment because I thought my family’s experience sounds pertinent to what you’re dealing with. My grandpa left Switzerland for the states because he hated how small-town it was, how you’re put into you’re little box and you have to stay there (he was frustrated because he was not appreciated in the field he anticipated). Then, decades later, my mom left Canada (greater Toronto area) for the states because she was similarly disillusioned by the small-town atmosphere, and how everybody knows everybody’s business. Similar stories, no? At the same time, Canada has grown much since she left, and going from Switzerland where you’re surrounded by gorgeous nature, you might feel more at home in Canada than the states. It sounds like you’re looking for a more urban environment, so I’d suggest Vancouver or Toronto or even Montreal. Some of the cities in the states, such as LA, are so urban that you can drive for several hours without leaving the urban sprawl. In the states we’re having many problems, and many of us are trying to leave. With your position in medicine, Canada sounds like a good bet for you. As many other folks are commenting Canada is welcoming doctors right now. Hope this helps!

As a US citizen who is a healthcare worker in the tristate new England area, stay in Switzerland if your option is to go to the US. USA Healthcare has become corporatized, spending time with patients is frowned upon & there are countless instances of malpractice lawsuits because doctors just don't have the time/permissions to provide to adequate care. It's a numbers game, how many patients a day can you see. The insurance companies dictate what you can do versus what the patient actually needs to survive. It's absolutely heartbreaking. I'm not a doctor but work closely with some and have friends who are from outside my job. They all have the same issues. The only ones who don't have issues with it are part of the problem.

*stares in American in Switzerland* I can't speak to Canada and the UK but yeesh the US right now. In medicine you're looking at longer hours for the same pay, maybe a little more in real numbers after taxes but surprise you will have more bills like your own health insurance and a car. It's kinda a double edged sword because staying in medicine is the best work permit wise for the US. I don't really see a way in pharma unless you get in at Galderma or Roche or something here and they send you on a L1 over there. At the same time, yolo I guess. What better time to try than age 26. America is a weird and wild place tho. I'm from a medium sized American city, the same size as zurich, and my home city feels smaller. So really go big if you want city life like Chicago or nyc or something. I would suggest making sure you have a way back, make contributions to your third pillar anyway and I think you can make discretionary contributions to your second pillar from abroad. That's how I got myself into a hole in Switzerland at fifty- I can't go back to the US because my retirement and money are all here. Not that I would want to, at all, I'm just saying I didn't have my ducks in a row had I wanted to.
