my partner and i used to argue about movie night more than almost anything else. like every couple, we started by spending like half an hour scrolling through netflix and such, moved to sending each other throughout the day a bunch of “movies you should watch with your partner” lists, and seeing reddit posts about must watch movies, only to end up with an overwhelming amount of movies to choose from.
it was a real struggle for us, so we tried different strategies to make that choice easier:
- before a session, one person selects 3 movies he/she would like to watch, and the other chooses one from those 3. you take turns. it’s effective, but sometimes the one choosing does not feel like watching any
- having a “movie jar”, each of you can put a movie per week on the jar, and then you randomly take one when the time comes. it’s fun, it becomes “a thing” in the couple, but it can lead to poor random choices
- using movie picking apps like mooveenite (saw it on insta). feels like a more structured choice, but less organic
we’re happy rotating between these strategies, but i’m curious about what works for other couples
