Why do some people have multiple children despite struggling financially?

I've been wondering about something and would like to understand different perspectives.

I often hear people who are struggling financially say they have to work extremely hard just to support their family. At the same time, some of these families have two, three, or even more children.

If someone already knows that supporting a larger family will be financially difficult, why do they choose to have multiple children? Why not delay having children, have fewer children, or even decide not to have children if finances are a major concern?

I'm not trying to judge anyone. I'm genuinely interested in understanding the economic, cultural, social, religious, or personal reasons behind these decisions. I'd appreciate hearing from people with different experiences or perspectives.

  Not just the US. I'm Belgian with two kids. I get about €300/month (around $350 USD) in child benefits, plus some tax breaks and partial reimbursement for childcare. Before anyone thinks we're getting rich off this: we're not. 😅 I'll be the first to say those benefits aren't even close to enough to justify having kids just for the money. If that's someone's retirement plan, they're going to be very disappointed.

Not everyone chooses to have children, but many choose not to abort children, life is a struggle whatever amount of money someone has and children might be the only happiness they have.

  I think you skipped a step. They chose to have unprotected sex, then don't get an abortion despite that being the best for society. The public can only raise so many unplanned kids.

It sounds like you may be subject to a socioeconomic stereotype depending on context. I've heard it as well. I'm not saying that isn't said. I don't study the matter and have no professional opinion. So please understand my statements with that in mind. I'm very happy to change and edit based on new information. The world is so grey and messy Id consider that a question that is impossible to lock down. Struggling financially can mean billions of different things and come from a billion reasons. I don't think it's right to approach that question as there is a single answer. My personal answer (again just my unprofessional thoughts) this may be a form of bias where we just hear that one situation for whatever reason. I can't tell you the legitimate numbers of people "financially struggling" who don't have kids. Or even people who are financially successful who do.

Sex is fun. Depends on the country more kids = less burden. For example social welfare programs and older kids taking care of the younger kids. Some other countries a lots of kids don’t make it into adulthood.

I know someone who keeps giving birth and is on her fifth severely disabled child...she gets paid to stay home and be their caregiver. Free everything, and she runs social media which profits heavily off of telling her story...she's again pregnant...why work when you can have disabled kids and get paid to be their caretaker.

People have wildly different ideas about what a child has the right to expect from a parent. Some people put off children until they can meet their every want and need, support them through med school, etc. Others provide used clothes, cheap food, minimal health care and throw them out at 18.

It's just a consequence of doing certain actions and they decide to keep them. There isn't always heavy thought into it. I would even hesitate to say that they "chose" to have that many kids, it just happened and they live with it. Essentially, no actual family planning, or any planning at all. They just go with the flow. I've seen it unfold with family. 3 kids (almost 4, but she miscarried), and bouncing from hotel to hotel. They are effectively homeless, but they get by I guess. I am also somewhat a product of this sort of life, but at least my parents had some kind of home for us.

I am those people. I had my two kids before I was financially stable. I had a weird life trajectory. It was on a hope that things will get better. And I didn't wanna wait too much to make it hard for my wife medically, or also didn't want to be too old when my kids get to teenage. Things are good now Alhamdulillah. We are a happy family. It was a very bad decision on my part when I look behind. But it turned out to be good in my case.

There is a strong correlation between poverty, education, and health care. In poorer countries we see all of these factors lacking for the general public- lack of education (especially sex education), lack of opportunity (jobs, money), and lack of health care (lack of birth control). Sex is fun no matter what your economic situation is, so people continue to have sex- therefore they continue to have children. We can see similar parallels here in the US in poorer areas such as the Deep South and Appalachia. When any of these factors trend toward the positive for the population, they others tend to do so as well. So sometimes poorer people have sex because it's fun and they are bored, they may not have the means or the education to prolong until the timing is better.

Because education about reproduction is, in many places, very strongly limited by religious or cultural ideas, so people learn about sex and pregnancy prevention from undereducated peers. Because contraception costs money and places that offer it for free are stigmatized, picketed, people are publicly shamed for going there, and sometimes violently shamed. Because even if you can get it, birth control is never 100%. Because we're inundated with the idea that "if you loved me, you would let me have sex with you". Because people are lonely and we're taught through media that sex is love. Because ending an unwanted pregnancy is illegal in many places. I feel like this question wasn't really asked I good faith.

I AM NOT saying this is the case with everyone in that situation, but some people just suck. I got a cousin who would openly admit that she was having another baby to increase her welfare check. She would then pawn the kids off on any family member who would take them and never spend a dime or a minute on their well being. Further more she leverage her kids, lack of a structured household, and dependence on the government, to get anything she could out of those around her. She is a leech that has taken human form and there are others like her out there. Not all of course, but some.
