I have had a great experience using AI tools for coding, writing, project planning, misc tasks. But for design it just isn’t doing it.

AI is going to always be bad a truly creative or artistic work. All it can do is mimic. It does not have a unique emotional perspective like a human can have. AI can make UI that is okay or even sufficient, especially for very common patterns and simple use cases.
I mean, this isn't true. The vast, vast, vast majority of product work is copying rather than doing anything massively creative. It's not art, it's design, it's different.
I’ve had to train our AI tools to learn our product’s design system. Even with writing explicit rules and guidelines, it still likes to deviate and do stupid things. I’ve been using it for ideation and then taking those ideas and bringing them back in Figma to get the designs right.
One process that has somewhat helped me was using one AI tool to help me create a prompt for another AI tool. It sounds crazy but the first AI tool has all of the contacts for the project and the second AI tool is for design. It isn’t perfect, but it’s better than me asking the design to “create a new page to do XYZ “
They're uniquely bad at anything which they can't easily be trained to do. And they can't be easily trained to do anything that isn't more or less trivially mathematically verifiable. They can do a better job than most people who haven't specialized in a particular task, but that doesn't mean they can do a good job, or even a good enough job

They're not "uniquely bad" at design. They're ALSO bad at a lot of other things they get used for. The current wave of tech is fundamentally just a pattern matching predictive engine for language at a larger scale than we used to have. In some cases that works out pretty well, especially when replicating very common established patterns, there's a high chance of getting a response that looks like the expected pattern. But it fails in really basic ways that no person ever would and especially fails on unique new tasks not captured in training data. But mostly it's being upsold as magical thinking machine that will surpass humanity which it just isn't and people who believe that are fundamentally unserious or simply scamming us. Unfortunately they also have all the VC money.
AI is pretty bad unless you use it in one specific way — to stress test, or further develop something you already have the answer to, or have foundational knowledge of Any other way is always going to be sub par

Surprised to see writing included in the list of competencies. I find AI writing to be mostly trash, especially anything that is editorial or creative in nature
A couple weeks ago id agree. I started using fable 5 for designing complex landing page animations… now im on board with that aspect of it.
