I was assured to hard that this is only something that the CPC would do. What ever happened lol?
Carney is a conservative. Do keep up.

“Why would Pierre do this!?”
What is your point?
God damn opposition!!
He wouldn't if he had won?
Is my understanding correct that part of privatizing airports is not only to get a bit of a cash infusion from the sale, but because it'll lead to more development around said airports that has otherwise been stagnant?
If they privatize healthcare I’m sure we could get some more development around our hospitals too. /s This is a bad move as our airports are fine as they are currently. We don’t need massive developments around them that will lead the average consumer to paying more.
A one time cash infusion for the Liberals to screw over all future generations and make flying in Canada even more expensive.
Why not just develop around the airport instead of selling it..
That's the rationale sure, but as countless Canadian privatization efforts show, it's great for government balance sheets and those who have access to those coffers and miserable for everyone else.
Must be why Putin just sold the Moscow Airport for 1/2 price as well 🤔
If our airports were actually good, I’d be complaining, but they’re pretty terrible. I’m in the 'let's try something different' camp. Billy Bishop is private. For what it works with, it's pretty well run.
The core issue with privatizing a service is that the entire goal shifts considerably. A Service is expected to cost money - there is no expectation (or there shouldn’t be) of turning a profit - you are investing the money in the overall welfare of society, essentially. Private enterprise has a goal of profit - and maximizing said profit. There is expected to be a return on investment and it’s generally expected to grow. Private airports absolutely work - as does private healthcare - but the goal and the effort shifts. This is a really bad place for most services to shift as things like quality become antagonists to making as much money as possible.
The following is what was said about the privatization of FIFA, and, it completely applies to Canadian airports.
The moment private equity gets their greedy hands on airports, it’s going to be all about how they need to make more money, and consumers are going to end up paying a lot more.
“The moment external investors acquire ownership interests ... football changes forever. Commercial return becomes a permanent obligation. ... Every decision is no longer driven by what best serves the game, but by what best serves shareholders.”
But the world cup already works very well and has no shortage of capital. Travel in Canada is not competitive and is extremely expensive. Privatisation is about bringing in additional money for additional capacity and competition, which really doesn't apply to football. For reference, loads of airports in Europe are fully or partially private, and their system is much better for consumers than ours even with a profit element.
Yep, all you need to do to see how pe craters the quality of an airport, just get a connecting flight through Heathrow.
Now extend that same logic to the rest of our economy. Our combined economic output should be reinvested into those who create it not just to the tiny minority who demand ever more.
Yeah wtf do we need to monetize airports for PRIVATE companies?? You wanna charge an entrance fee like at Athens airport? And have that revenue go towards the maintenance? By all fukin means.
I'd suggest that government money will still endlessly pour into the airport as well, and the operator will probably also get tax breaks. Anything to keep the airport open as it's critical infrastructure - which is WHY it should never be private. It's a short term financial gain to be held at the mercy of private equity forever. Terrible business for a country.
The idea is to incentivize airlines to help build airport infrastructure. Like if you see a flaw but gain nothing from it, do you say it’s not your problem and continue walking? What if you gained something from saying x is a problem and id help fund it. Kinda like a renter getting a cut of the property.
Can't wait for the $20 passenger drop off fee like the UK \\s
Don't worry about it...... It will be 50.
Liberals what happened to Canada not for sale? You surebkove your slogans.
Canada is for sale. We sold the massive Nexen Energy and the land to China in 2014.
Don't be obtuse, we don't want that shit either. The people in power always end up representing their own interests eventually and we try to vote em out and the cycle never fucking ends
Im not sure the pros and cons of this and would be open to hearing them. London Heathrow is private and seems very well done. With flights in Europe from it much cheaper than inter Canada flights. Any major downsides to this idea other than the assumption it would make things more expensive ?
There is no guarantee that the service nor efficiency will improve. Private competition is good when there is competition. However there is no competition when it comes to airports. It's not like you can build a competing airport right next to another one.
Canada is NOT for sale! Except for the airport parts! LPC.
And our ports. Don’t forget that.
Can't wait to fly into AtkinsRealis airport instead of Pierre Elliot Trudeau.
Don't worry, the engineering consultant behemoths get their pound of flesh no matter who owns what
You're going to wish it was AtkinsRealis when you hear the pilot over the PA saying "We are now landing at Rogers International Airport"
Those losers (SNC-Lavalin) should have been slapped with a name-change fee with all the bullshit they caused. Especially with their corruption with the Otrain in the capital.
What a terrible idea.
I have no issue selling them off but why as private equity assets? Sell them off as part of a public firm, so that there is at least some easier gov surveillance and regulation.
Yeah let's privatize an entity that monopolizes an essential service to huge regions of the country, great plan dickhead.
I agree with a lot of moves Carney wants to make but not this one. This is short sighted and will only hurt Canadians in the long run, not to mention compromising our national security. Very dumb.
Most airports in Europe are private. It's part of the reason why you can fly anywhere for $100. They cost less to fly into and out of than Canadian airports.
The only type of privatization that I would support is if they are 100% put into the wealth fund that Carney wants and are never sold in the future. Sort of like BC Ferries in how its a private company where the sole owner is the BC gov.
So a crown corporation then ?
The point of going private is to increase competition. BC Ferries has no competition. If they opened up the terminals to allow private get companies to operate and make their terminals more like airports, that would be interesting. Until then, BC Ferries is like if there was only one government run airline allowed to use Canadian airports.
They privatized YVR years ago it’s been consistently rated as the top airport North America. It’s run by a board that does a good job. I’m not a fan of the private equity angle though.
can we fucking not
did you vote Liberal or Conservative or Green party during the last federal election?
If our airports were actually good, I’d be complaining, but they’re pretty terrible. I’m in the 'let's try something different' camp. Billy Bishop is private. For what it works with, it's pretty well run.
How many of our pension funds own foreign airports and other infrastructure? How about we say no to this but also stop funding our public sector retirements by sucking wealth out of other countries?
Our airports are essential national security infrastructure that generates $500 million a year for the taxpayer just in land rental from the federal government. Why would we EVER want to sell this off? Private Equity will just jack up AIF fees while making the airports even shittier. Can the government show any cases where selling off the airports worked out BETTER for the citizens?
Can the government show any cases where selling off the airports worked out BETTER for the citizens?
See Europe.
Carney is a crony plain and simple.
Carney needs to screw off on this idea, I voted for him but increasingly not enjoying his decisions.
Horrible idea wtf
Transport infrastructures should never be private, we have plenty of exemples withon canada of how it doesn't work
Toll roads, pipelines, and power transmission lines (at least in Alberta) would like a word.
Sell everything we paid for, for no return to us!
Gross.
I don't know but I don't like that idea at all.
The only thing privatization will add is just more duty free shops, not faster processing time or lower fees. Get ready to pay thousands more for your flights. To the point where flying from the US may seem a cheaper alternative.
But can you imagine if the conservatives did this? Lol
Most major airports in Canada are currently operated as locally-run non-profit airport authorities who have multi-decade lease agreements. Exactly what would they be privatizing - the right to collect rent?
I’ll be honest idk if what we have now is any different. We use public funds to constantly bail these companies out. Which ones costs us more?
If Carney privatizes airports he's losing my vote. If you privatize there is a board who's only responsibility is to their shareholders, which means they need growth every year. We will be paying more and more for already unaffordable travel inside Canada. What a stupid idea. If this goes through I'm done with Carney.
