What's with all the lies about AI in our industry?

I work at a big fortune 50 company in a department called Enterprise business intelligence, doing data engineering, analytics engineering, and such about two and a half years ago. When AI was first introduced, people started going on chat GPT on their actual browser and using their own premium plans. Back then, AI seems to be capable of some really small lightweight coding tasks, but otherwise, was pretty unhelpful for anything else. Fast forward to today, we have Gemini Enterprise and Claude. Claude is like 3 to 4 times as expensive as Gemini. It does work better. But in terms of intelligence specifically, there is no increase over gemini, really. They are both pretty stupid.

But it seems like there's a lot of lies about it. Executives constantly saying that they are using it for XYZ and ABC and that soon we will roll out this new product that will do ABCDEF and it's not true. 6 months go by and we're still doing it the old painful way. They roll out a agent or a silly chatbot and nothing comes of it. It's not useful. Complained about to death, people and customers cussing up a storm telling you all about how terrible it is and then it silently gets scaled back. But the executives keep talking about ai and how useful it is and how they want people to use it!

I also wanted to mention in terms of intelligence and I mean thinking capability, I have noticed no change whatsoever. The same sort of questions I asked two and a half years ago to earlier models, compared to today asking it to Claude Opus, or Gemini Pro 3.1, it's literally no more intelligent than it was years ago. Forget the benchmarks that people keep sharing. I've used it in business context. Feeding an emails and documents and stuff, asking a business questions. There is NO intelligence.

Finally, it's really funny to me how many companies are scaling back their ai. The fact that amazon, which is like a monopoly and every industry in the usa, is pulling back on AI is really telling you something. This is a company run by a guy who owns his own newspaper company and has gone to space, and is infinitely wealthy. Not even he and his company can afford to use AI. Just wow

To say Claude is no more intelligent than Gemini is a special take, and to say AI has not progressed at all in the past 2 and half years is a truly astonishing take. If your one month old account isn’t just posting engagement bait to farm karma, then you should really publish whatever magical infra and harness you have to make a modern SOTA model as dumb as the original ChatGPT. People would study the hell out of it to make sure whatever you guys do in your special company does not get repeated elsewhere lol

  I'm going to agree with OP here. LLM's (It's not AI) haven't meaningfully progressed in the past 2 and a half years. They still use the same underlying architecture, and largely the same distribution of training data. There has been no meaningful breakthrough in the last 5 years, and all they've functionally done is scale up the number of parameters. I know not everyone understands Machine Learning, so if I can put it in a way more friendly to the layman, it's like claiming your PC has experienced a breakthrough because you've installed an addition 32GB of RAM when you never really had RAM issues in the first place. In both cases, the bottleneck lies elsewhere.

  I love people who reply just to argue, always the same reply template claiming that anyone you disagree with is "farming karma" by somehow saying things that are unpopular and people may disagree with. Which is fine, I don't mind people disagreeing with me. You have no evidence whatsoever that AI has progressed in intelligence over a two-year time span. There's literally no evidence out there that proves that. They've taken tests like from law school or medical school or answering silly trivia questions like they are being quizzed on the dictionary. I've actually used these models in a professional capacity at work, not some silly test by these random people on the web who have never used it for an actual professional task. The AI is not getting more intelligent. Admittedly, that is my anecdotal evidence. You are more than welcome to disagree with it. But I have one thing on my side that you cannot refute. If AI truly has gained distance in intelligence over the past two years, then why hasn't replaced people in non-technical roles? It should be more intelligent according to people like you! So why can't it take over these business areas that require domain knowledge? It has intelligence, doesn't it? I'll wait I'm sure you have a great answer for that

Psychosis. I agree it's been the same for the last few years. Maybe everyone else is just getting dumber from overusing LLM's? I don't know man. Reddit is full of bots from Anthropic and OpenAI astroturfing to manipulate sentiment and push narratives. Ignore the noise and continue crafting software by hand and learning from other experts. The more publicity someone has, the more likely it is they're full of shit.

  You’re not wrong but they’re destroying the institution of scientific research by having an abysmal number of peer reviews for the research papers these companies publish. The way frontier model makers treat papers is pure marketing hype with a thin veneer of science.

Blog TLDR - some of the people that you describe as lying are actually idiots and true believers. For the rest of them, there is currently an ongoing prisoner's dilemma/coordination problem between executives at large companies.

If any one of them tries to turn down the temperature on the LLM and AI talk - and there is definitely a temptation to with the skyrocketing costs - they risk directly insulting the "AI is making me 100x faster" executives at companies that are their customers, on their board of directors, or that they have vendor relationships with. This would jeapordize their cushy executive position and risk alienating them from that strata of people.

They dont know who among them is a true believer, and who is just playing along like them for the cash, so the strategy is just keep pumping AI and keep your head down. For everyone.

The result is that nothing is going unchallenged in these proposal sessions now, and scammers and running rampant, and bilking organizations with large wallets for all theyre worth. Even hyperscalars are rabid now. Its shocking to witness such mass hysteria.

  This is going to be case by case. I've been actively combatting the hype while promoting what does work at my company, basically pushing for use of AI where it's high reward and low risk.

The thing about AI is that the overall long term cost/benefit analysis is a minefield. How much will AI cost in the future? How much time will it save a dev on a given day? but also - what are the mid-to-long term impacts of deskilling? How much of that saved time will get lost again when all your company's developers have a reduced knowledge of the codebase but a bug has come up that Claude can't help with? Do devs like AI heavy workflows? Some do, but if a bunch don't, does that impact employee turnover? And that's just the middle-long term, in the proper long term, what about when your seniors retire and there's a scarcity of juniors? Will AI get so good at debugging and coding that it'll solve some of these problems? Maybe, maybe not. I think a lot of people, both C-suites and devs, are going to make some pretty bad calls until we know more.
