What is your approaches to working with wet samples?

I've acquired a handful of sample packs. I've noticed there's a lot of unused loops music that can fit musically in some of my productions. However, majority of them are wet or post processed and without a dry version.

What is your approaches of working with samples that have processing like reverbs to get them into your track's mix? Not just drum hits, but I mean more complex things like melody loops and ensembles recorded in one audio file.

From my knowledge, working with audio that has different things like reverb or delay can cause issue. I been taught to keep your reverbs consistent for the entire production. Or maybe am I sweating it too much.

For some songs, you may want to keep the reverbs consistent. Other songs may have 3,4 or more different reverbs in them and sound great. All you can do is listen to the wet loops and decide whether or not they sound right for your productions. All the best!

Usually I’d run them into an audio-midi converter and see if I can make something close without the reverb

Sweating to much. If it sounds good, it is good. All the greatest tracks have samples in them, taken from post recorded tracks. Sample away my friend

You can gate it for instance. For the pre-delay early reflections you can edit them in RX for instance. RX has a de-reverb algo which is hit or miss sometimes

  This! Noise gate can also be used as a sort of a sidechain. Basically you take a loop (whatever it may be drums, vocal, melodic) and use it as a trigger. Anytime the gate triggers the loop, whatever synth you're using mimics that rhythm. It's sorta like those old nexus looping arps but more homemade lol

hey man, this is super annoying. I actually stopped buying sample packs altogether due tot his and just use Battery for all my drums.for so many years I tried working these wet samples out with transient designers, gate and what not. just recreate the sample dry or use a sampler library like Battery 4 where you have complete control of the sound. if your mix is full of wet samples with different reverb lengths its gonna sound like a big muddy wall.

If it’s a one shot, I layer them in to my own programmed drums to help create ambience. I’ll draw in my own fades so the tail ends when i want it. Pro tip: if you’re in Ableton, take the wet loop and set the warp mode to Beat. Then, set the playback to forward only (by default it’s forward/back) and then mess with the slider to the right (defaults as 100) - basically, it adds a fade per transient so you can keep the initial hit and then ableton automatically fades the tail. This can make wet loops sound drier.

Honestly you're overthinking the "consistent reverb" rule — that's about intentional cohesion, not a law, and tons of producers use wet loops. The move isn't to dry it to match your mix, it's to sit it back and let the space be the point. Drop the level, sidechain it to the kick, high-pass the low-end wash, and that baked reverb goes from problem to vibe. If it sounds good in the track, it's good - trust your ears as they are the greatest tool you have in music production.

I usually just treat it like a parallel processing wet chain and just sidechain it to itself either through a compressor or a gate - could potentially work then release on the gate as well to make it fit better, but more-so a sidechain compressor for the initial hit so it can be as dry as possible, although it doesn’t always work, so it helps if you really like that sample to just have more things in the arrangement that are dry to balance the mix out.
