I'm learning Go, and I would like your suggestions

Hello everyone, hope you all are doing well

I'm a Golang beginner, I've learned the basics of the language, variables types, functions, loops and now I'm learning concurrency.

I would like your suggestions about projects, language topics you think are interesting to learn, and some tips to help me get the hang of it.

  Thanks for answering! I'll upvote. I've asked to my IA Agent to create a path to learn Go, but I feel that humans have more interesting answers, because each person have a different experience with projects or with their study path. With AI I got a very useful path to learn Go, but with the people here I got different places to learn and projects to build, and of course, their experience is very important

I think you should first try to create a basic web server, have a database connection executing queries, learn how things are actually done in Go - The directory structure, the interfaces, the manual dependency injection, etc. And once you are done with that, I would advise you to go through Goroutines, create an inventory that gets actively auctioned solely using go routines. This exact learning path helped me a lot. Hope it does the same for you!

  Personally, I'm writing native Win32 programs entirely in Go (no cgo), and I'm amazed on how well Go works as a replacement for C.

If you can get a handle on these, you'll make yourself pretty bankable as a Go DEV:

- Concurrency/Go routines. Sounds like you already started this and they are pretty simple. Try creating a wrapper toolkit for yourself to make setting them up quickly when you need. Focus on getting some experience learning how to multithread your app (or more importantly, WHY you would want to multi thread certain parts of your app)

- API development (net/http lib) .. you could use something like Gorilla but honestly id create your own custom wrapper tools. Just learn to spin up REST based API points that spit back JSON ...and learn to create Websockets (optional, but if youre wanting to write chat rooms or some other project that needs realtime data response for your app? learn to generate websockets)

- Read and write files to disk. I do a ton of work ingesting CSV, JSON, XML. This is musthave if you do a lot of backend or DevOPS work.

- Database toolkit: FYI i tend to use mongo for everything unless I cant. But you should for sure learn how to write to and read from databases (make a wrapper toolkit for yourself for rapid development. )

One of the things i do when starting a new project is create all my structs/"models" that Id WANT to save to database, then write the fundamental "save to database" logic. But instead of actually writing to a database, i just save those structs (as json) to disk

The reasoning is to avoid dealing with a lot of heavy database and dependency stuff in the early POC phase of a project. I do a ton of refactoring my data models at the beginning so I save a lot of time not worrying about database specific work.

Later when I decide on what database to use? I just swap out that underlying functionality in my "save to database" logic to write to Mongo, SQL server, CosmoDB, (or whatever), instead of to disk

And hey there are also a ton of instances where you want to persist data to disk but not be dependent on a full database.

- Also, you should learn godotenv (reading and writing to them) Simple dotenv logic you probably already are familiar with. Since these use simple Key/Value pairs, they are much lighter than writing whole Go Structs to disk. If you need very simple persistance between your program runs? this is the way

I think the open source free test driven development in Golang is really good. It starts from basics of go, but with tdd approach. You write tests, it fails, you try to pass it thru writing go. See how the code performs using benchmark, see test coverages, etc. With all of this, it also teaches lot of refactoring, go internals that is really eye opening. I am currently going on thru it, and its really good

I’d suggest picking an idea for a pet project and just start building. From my experience, the best way to really learn a something is hands-on practice.

Also, if you don’t have a subscription to an LLM provider yet (like Claude, ChatGPT, OpenCode Go, etc.), no matter whether it's cheap or pricey, just get one. Why? AI agents are great for reviewing your changes and helping you learn as you go.

Ah, pro tip: check out this teaching skill prompt by Matt Pocock. You can install it to your AI Agent so it actually teaches you concepts and guides your thinking, instead of just dumping finished code on you.

This is what i did : 1- learn the syntax, write me some easy code or solve some easy coding problems 2- go build something you have built before with zero AI. I had a web application in Java went and re-built it using Go Gin with no AI. It took some time but you'll learn a lot.
