Hello! I want to make a video of the CD spinning with the background transparent, but as you can see some of the top of the cd is fully white, I was playing around with the rotoscoping tool but it is having a hard time keeping form while spinning.
I would like it to be square shaped even if its all white. any tips on how to keep the shape.
This is my first time in after effects btw, I use premiere instead
I mean, if you just want it from the point where the cd is rotating, I would use an animated mask. It's a fairly simple shape and it repeats so you could even reuse keyframes. You likely won't be able to use that technique if you wanted to eliminate the white that is inside the cd case. Good luck.
id roto the disk with a mask and key the rest. the stuff thats transparent should be transparent on any other bg anyhow…
it won't be transparent. it's on a solid white background
Oof. Gonna have to mask it all.
First, use the animated mask like u/monkfishjoe said, then if you wanna take it a step further, you can export each frame, import them into photoshop and use the background eraser tool to remove the translucent part of the CD case, then import it back into AE.
You are going to struggle with rotoscoping if it is your first time in after effects. I’d farm out the roto on Upwork or something if you can afford it, otherwise it’s time to learn

Where did you get this clip? This is clearly a 3D rendering, so the original rendering will have alpha channel. You can find other stock footage of CD spinning with alpha channel, instead of trying to key something like this
kanye dropped this in 2018 album never dropped and the artwork is vaulted :(
So do you just want the spinning CD with the purple bar? Or the entire case with the rounded corners? Either way, you could make a shape layer that matches, make it 3d, extrude and rotate it to match, adjust the camera angle until the perspective is good, and then manually keyframe some points as needed and use it as a layer mask. After Effects is like Photoshop in that you can give 5 different people the same gig, and get 5 totally different solutions.

Just recreate everything, you could probably find similar free assets (cd case, cd) in 30mn and then redo the text elements in photoshop.
