Did Sam"s Club start with a group membership? You had to get a group (20? 40?) or join a group to get a membership? Do they still do that? I tried to join as the current special, but I'm not a new member since i had one 5 years ago :? Yes, it says 1 year, but .. its not. There's a senior member, you have to go thru ID.me, a site i've never heard of. Can i walk in and join, show senior ID?

It was originally a business wholesale warehouse store. So, in order to get a membership, you have to have a business or work for a business that had a membership. But they don’t require that anymore.
Maybe it was people i knew who had membership by their employer... its been a long time.
And even that hasn't been a thing for at least 30 years -- my parents had a membership back in the late 90s, and definitely weren't doing it as a business.

Hmm. I just looked and they have a deal going until Sept 30 for $25 for the first year. It says it's only available through their online link, so no walking in to get this deal. And you have to have not been a member for 6 months. It's possible that the ID.me verification is required, and that may be why it rejected you. I use ID.me to access several US government programs, and so far it has been perfectly safe. Like anything else, you have to vigilant against phishing and other scams, but you have to be careful no matter what you're using. I would try to get the deal using ID.me verification service, And if that doesn't work I would call and try and figure out what the problem is.
Maybe Ittll work this time. Gas is almost 50 cents cheaper there, even lower than walmart , and they are generally the same in my town.
I seem to remember that back in the 80s you had to be a teacher, first responder, military or some such other to get a membership. I worked for a military contractor and that did the job. I remember when they first opened it was unique. Like the last scene of Raiders of the Lost Ark.
I think ‘The Price Club’ used to do this also, back in the day
