"you trained yourself to be manageable" this sentence is doing something to me. been calling it being considerate. starting to think it's something older and less voluntary than that.
somewhere you got the idea that your full volume was a problem.
maybe it was one specific person who made you feel like your enthusiasm was excessive, your opinions were too strong, your presence took up more air than it should. maybe it wasn't even said directly. maybe it was just a look, a subtle shift in tone, a pattern of responses that taught you to read the room before deciding how much of yourself to bring into it.
and you learned the lesson so well that you started applying it everywhere, including rooms that never gave you any reason to. you walk into spaces with people who would genuinely welcome more of you and you still do the quiet calculation before you speak. checking how much space you're taking. pulling back to the edited version before anyone's even signaled they'd prefer it.
the most frustrating version of this is when you notice yourself going small around people you already trust. not new people, not high-stakes situations where some calibration makes sense. people you've known for years, people who've told you directly they value your perspective, and you still find yourself softening the edges, leaving out the part of the thought that felt slightly too much, agreeing with something you actually have a different take on just because taking up the space to disagree felt like a risk you didn't want to run.
you trained yourself to be manageable. and manageable is a fine thing to be in the right situations. but it becomes a loss when it runs as the default in every situation regardless of whether the situation actually called for it.
11 months ago you had a conversation where you finally said something exactly the way you actually thought it, no softening, no qualifier at the end to make it easier to push back on, just the real version of the opinion. and the person you were talking to didn't recoil. they leaned in. they said that's the most interesting thing you've said to me in months.
which told you something about how much of the interesting had been getting filed down before it reached anyone.
you don't have to be loud. you don't have to perform a bolder version of yourself.
you just have to stop pre-emptively apologizing for taking up the exact amount of space you were going to take up anyway.

This is exactly what I needed to hear.
The part about editing yourself before anyone even asks you to really hit home. I think a lot of people confuse being considerate with constantly shrinking, but those are very different things. There's a big difference between reading the room and assuming the room doesn't have space for you before you've even spoken.
You should write a book. You insights are terrific. I started my career in self employed sales, mortgage, 3 kids to feed. My spouse said I had skin of a Rhino (thick and tough). I had to be like that just to survive. After 40 yrs my career is at the other end and a success and I now see people a bit differently. Some have skin that is very sensative. They don't respond well to the Rhino me. Sometimes (most times) I just brush it off and say to myself- get a back bone, about a person. Right or wrong. Just keep moving like a shark in the water. Now of course I don't have to devour every prey I come across. But it is interesting to think in different terms. Good for you to put it in writing.
I genuinely appreciate that. Maybe one day I will. For now, I'm just trying to write the things people often struggle to put into words.
Just because it's AI doesn't mean it's wrong.
ir just means it's absolutely empty of substance because it's not someone's experience but rather a worthless machine typing words that "sound nice". Utter garbage
It's amazing how much lighter life feels once you stop trying to fit into places that were never meant for you.
