Hi everyone,

I'm a Finnish guy with Southeast Asian origin currently mapping out my long-term future, and Sweden is at the top of my list for a stable, peaceful life. I’d love some candid, real-world feedback from locals or expats on whether my profile is realistic for the Swedish market.

Here’s my situation:

Education: BASc in Mechanical Engineering (study duration is 4 years)
Career Gap: I have a ~6-year gap in traditional engineering. Reason: Job market in Finland is just bloody hard. I work different jobs though, there has not been unemployed period.
Languages: Fluent English, B2 Swedish. By the time I arrive, the skill would be C1, so no problem on language part.
Work Rights: EU Citizen (no visa or sponsorship needed for Swedish employers).

My long-term goal: I’m looking to settle down, work in engineering (open to entry/bridging roles like CAD/BIM modeling, Quality/Validation, Operations, or Facilities), buy a modest home, and eventually build a family.

I’d really appreciate your honest take on two things:

Job Market Reality: How big of a red flag is a 6-year engineering gap in Sweden?
Social Integration & Dating: As someone of Southeastern Asian background who is genuinely dedicated to learning the language and integrating, how doable is it to build a real social circle and find a partner for a quiet life in Sweden?

Any brutally honest advice, reality checks, or tips on how to position myself would be greatly appreciated.

Sweden's unemployment is quite bad as well. currently at 9.9% so it is just marginally better than finland. If you struggled so hard to get a job in Finland I don't think you will have a much easier time in Sweden, especially with an 6 year gap.

  Hi, thanks for the insight! The language might be one of the main reasons why I struggled in Finland even though people speak excellent English over here. There have been entry-leveled jobs that require only English but I do feel like there's hidden policy or simply mentality of hiring only the natives first. Finnish employers aren't open-minded, at least the ones I have been applying to. Now that I could speak a language at decent level in a country I would like to live in, wondered if my luck would change?

  A few years ago just right after graduation when expectation to secure a stable position in the society was high, I could talk to people. I decided to study Swedish for this reason, I simply don't see myself having a chance to survive here anymore. There are people who live just fine on social welfare and don't work at all, but this is not why I come to Europe.
