Easy way to post Learning Targets?

Hi, recently got new admin, and they (well, the district) really want us to have our learning target, standards, essential questions posted during every class. I have 3 preps and I don't really want to write all those on the board every day. Any recommendations for easy ways to put them up? I was thinking like a separate screen that I could share a word doc to, so I can just copy/paste it all off the curriculum guide. Any thoughts/tips? Thank you all!

I make mine vague enough that I can claim it's what we're doing and then keep it up all year. Admin doesn't know the standards by heart for every subject. And it's a waste of time, which I just never have enough of.

  Exactly. I change mine every 4 weeks (the length of the unit). But not one admin knows what is was or going to be. If I didn't change it, they really wouldn't know.

  Yup, I used the same generic wording and would change a word or two after admin came in my room (which happened maybe once a year). Admin doesn't understand what you're teaching so they have no idea if the learning target matches that day's lesson. As long as they see the educationally correct words (parrot something from the start of the year PD), you're golden.

Where I teach we're lucky enough to have SmartBoards. Several of us post these thing there in Google Classroom or Slides for easy switching between classes AND reusability.

My admin always wants them posted so I just put like a vague one over whatever unit I’m teaching. Like if I’m doing my fairy tale unit and that day is Hansel and Gretel. Instead of having a complex and very detailed one like “ I can describe the character, setting and plot of Hansel and Gretel” I’d just put down “ I can describe the characters, setting and plot of different fairy tale stories.” I would just keep that one up for the whole unit. Honestly at my school admin doesn’t even do many walk through nor do they even know what we’re teaching by having a vague one they sort of get a sense of what I’m doing.

I'm going into my second yr so this is my only experience, but we have to post our learning target and success criteria everyday. Here's what I do and what I've seen others do. Last yr I had two preps, but my first subject was 1st hour and the rest of the day was the second subject. So I just planned to switch my whiteboard at the end of the hour. Other teachers I know have either 1) created a running slidedeck that is visible throughout the hour or just at the very beginning 2) printed, laminated, and attached magnets to their standards written out as learning targets (this was a yr long effort to avoid ever having to write them again) 3) sacrificing the whiteboard space to write out each subjects info and leaving it for the day. Ik this doesn't really work around the writing them out, just wanted to offer what I've seen!

I write the agenda on the board every day and I’ve had some admin who thought that was enough. For the other admin I found out that they actually knew so little about math that I left the same learning objective up there and they never put it together that that isn’t what we were doing.

I bought some standards cards on TPT when I was in 6th grade. I would have them up for the duration of the unit with the "I can..." Wording. Explain to the kids what they are and how they can refer back to what they are learning and trying to achieve

If you use an application like Classroom Screen, that's an easy way to just have it there at all times. You can set up a widget to pull it from a particular file or set of slides, I think. I don't use it but I've seen others use it.

I HATE writing daily targets. It feels performative. However, there is some research that suggests that having them up AND REFERRING BACK TO THEM has value. Plus, admin wants to see them, so i created a system that works for me and keeps admin off my back. I keep mine very broad and everyone who has seen them likes them. The unit goal is at the top, followed by a list of vocabulary and then a list of steps that will get us to the goal, or perhaps parts of the final product, written with action words For example. Goal: Add and subtract fractions with like (same) denominators Define: fraction, numerator, denominator.... Bullet points: Use a tape diagram to show addtion/subtraction Use a model or manipulative to show Use the written method (These are out of order, but you get the idea) Goal: Write a 3 paragraph response to a prompt Include: Intro Body Conclusion Proper spelling and grammar Variety of word choice and sentence structure Etc. I have magnet arrows that I made that say "Today" and I use those to point to which part or parts we're working on that day. With this system, I only have to change what's on the board when we start a new unit. Many of mine are in a document that I print on large paper and post for the duration. I've had district personnel and educational experts compliment this system.

I put all of the learning targets for the unit on Post-it anchor chart paper and check them off as we go, so students can see the progress, and I put the daily one at the bottom of the slides.

Buy a cheap large-ish monitor on marketplace and set it up as your 2nd (or 3rd) monitor to only display the learning targets. You can display vertically right next to your white board.

I got a small, cheap TV off Facebook for like $20. I use Google Slides, type up my objective and then cast the slideshow to the TV. It's so much faster than writing it daily.

I have 3 preps too, and yes, it's obnoxious AF to post them. 1) The kids don't care. 2) I post mine in Spanish bc only 1 of our 4 building admin can read them. 3) I make an overarching objective and keep it up for multiple weeks. 4) FTS

I actually got dinged for this on my very first evaluation as a teacher (amongst other things lol) so I stayed on top of it ever after. I had 3 preps at that time too, so what I would do is put it on the screen along with their do-now/bellwork, and again with their exit-ticket, as well as put it on the whiteboards. I had two whiteboards flanking the Clevertouch (smart board) screen, and for the third prep I just put whiteboard sticker paper over the corkboard near them and wrote the learning targets for that course on that. This satisfied the admin at that school. At my most recent school what I did (2 preps) was write it (in expo marker) at the beginning of the day for each period. The teacher who had the room before me had put whiteboard sticker paper on a row of cabinets (science classroom) which worked out great as the actual big whiteboard was useless to me since I had to put my smart board in front of it. Since I used the smart board frequently during instruction, the learning target wouldn't be static like admin at the school wanted; unlike the previous school they didn't care if it was on the smart board at all. So putting it on the whiteboarded cabinets worked fine. Each course had their own designated cabinets with the day's learning target on them. Maybe do this? You can easily peel the white board sticker off at the end of the school year, if admin says too. Write it big, so that when the kids (and admin) walk in the door they see it right away and know right away what they are doing for the day.

It’s not super fast but I do type these out while looking at the curriculum guide one unit at a time, then print and post/flip for each lesson.

Education can be such a dog and pony show. I went to school in the 80s and 90s. Didn't receive my first B until 11th grade woodworking. Never once had a "learning intention" or "success criteria." The truth is, students need one of two things to be successful: either they have to give a shit, or their parents have to give a shit. Somewhere along the line, both stopped giving a shit.

I typed them out on copy paper and placed them in top loading sheets. I kept them in a binder divided by units. If you have 3 preps, have a space at the top of your homework board for it. Swap them out of the binder and hang with a magnetic hook or clip.

We have a poster printer, so I went module by module and made a poster for each lesson’s objectives and then another poster for that module’s standards. That way i only have to switch them out every few weeks or so and can reuse them every year.
