Adding another layer of oomph to the attacks in my action rpg!

I recently did a lot of research into retro games studying details. Thinking of myself as allknowing expert with thousands of games stored in my head, I was surprised how much top of the line stuff I could still find after all these years. For example, I stumbled across a game called "Shounen Ninja Sasuke" (super cool game that got a re-release recently, check it out!). In it, I really, really liked the hit animations. This is not something you usually do in 3D, so I had to simulate the animations to achieve this feeling. I added the eye effects as particle tilesheet animations, but more interestingly, I now rotate the enemy 3D Mesh to align with the camera for the duration of the hit, as if it was a 2D animated sprite. Yet again I am simulating something that emerged from a limitation of the 2D tech to add some style to my game. It is still more efficient to use 3D assets to simulate 2D effects, them to draw actual 2D art, in my view.
