YSK: before unplugging a desk, tv, or router setup, label both ends of every cable and take one photo of the ports

use masking tape and give each connection a number: 1 on the cable, 1 beside the port, then 2, 3, etc. the photo is backup for weird ports and power bricks that all look the same.

this takes maybe two mins before a move, repair, or deep clean and saves the dumb guessing game when everything goes back together.

Why YSK: a cable label is only useful if you know both what the cable is and exactly where it came from. marking both ends plus keeping one photo makes rebuilding the setup faster and avoids mixing up similar-looking cables or adapters.

Or do what I do. Rip everything out and throw the cables in a pile, then get pissed off because it take 30 minutes to set back up

  This is the way. Especially if you start with the intention of cleaning it up but get sick of it half way through so you end up just shoving the cords wherever they’ll fit again

  Genuinely - why would it take 30 minutes when so many leads are standardised? A kettle lead is a kettle lead, a HDMI is a HDMI. Unless you're using some very odd connectors, even ripping everything out (which is what I do and have always done) takes like 5 minutes to set back up.

They teach you how to do this in preschool. Match the shape to the hole that’s the same shape as the object you’re sticking in the hole.

  Yeah. For 99% of people, this is a nothing burger of an issue. Like, if you're doing a commercial server cabinet and need to make sure that the port for wall socket 24 connects back to the same place, sure, document the living crap out of it. But for home setups? Utter waste of time.

What cables are you using that are so obscure you can't distinguish "power lead, USB lead, HDMI, display port"? I've done computer stuff around home and work since I was like 7, so over 30 years at this point. The greatest struggle I have ever had was "oh, the HDMI is one way and I have it backwards" which I fixed in like 25 seconds. Way less time than masking, labelling, and photographing everything, even with your 2 minute estimate. I get it if you're dismantling a clock, doing a commercial server cabinated, or maybe even taking a whole computer apart, though even the computer internals are pretty standardised these days. But for your average desk/tv/router... my router has a power lead, a lead to go out to the ISP, and 4 ethernets, which can go in an combination. My entire gaming setup including monitors, keyboard, mouse, etc. 10, maybe 12 leads, and they're all either interchangeable (power leads, displayport leads, USB connectors), singular (ethernet) or attached to the thing they belong to (keyboard, speakers).

Labeling cables sounds tedious but it's saved me so much frustration during moves. The photo tip is brilliant, I always forget which port was which.
