This is the worst form of pay negotiation, holy shit.
Quite literally a reverse auction. How have workers rights been so easily undone.
Also a way to potentially get the lowest quality nurses. I would not feel comfortable as a patient there.
University of North Carolina is moving to a bid model for their nursing shifts and they’re focusing on only hiring the lowest bidders
Late stage capitalism. Uhhhh

Capitalism improves everything.
Everything = only profit
Every time I think I’ve seen it all, I’m proven wrong
like peeling back another layer of a dystopian onion every mf day
I genuinely get chills when I contemplate just how bad things will be in a few decades. Take it from me when I say it’s best not to think about the future too much if you want to have a somewhat pleasant day, lol
I may be a lot of things, but I take heart in knowing I didnt have kids that have to live through this nightmare.
We've seen the only thing that need seeing in this context and that person name is Luigi.
Holy fuck
Nurses are always having to deal with some bs
What. The. Fuck.
I'll do it for 30 an hour! 25! Do we have a 20! 19, SOLD! To the single mom in the back! Lmfao
It’s literally the practice of doordash and uber eats.
Making your workforce fight against one another to avoid poverty while also being pushed closer to poverty. Dystopian.
Right!!
That is when you organize a dinner with all the nurses and negotiate your collective rates to never go lower than x and aggressively cold out anyone stepping out of line.
Can't they just band together an all put 500 an hour?
Banding together is a lost form of art to the current iteration of human species.
Yeah. This is how you make your employees unionize.
Band together? Like a group of people acting in unison? We should have a name for such collective behaviour!
Until one person needs to feed their kids and bids 499. And so on.
So much for America taking all of canadas nurses. Looks like they will all be coming back.
Just say NO
Throw whoever’s idea this was into a volcano
Nah. Too quick and painless.
Lowest bid gets the right to yeet this person in the volcano...
solidarity is needed, but won't be there I've worked for a state place, lots of us held the line on pay, but lots folded and took lower pay
That example is - among many - a reason to form a union. Be assured that the people in power want to make us all slaves again...if you think this isn't true, you're delusional.
Nurses who know they're good won't buy into this, which means the nurses that end up "working" there will likely be less skilled, and UNC will develop a reputation for terrible healthcare, perhaps eventually doing away with that part of the university entirely as a cost-cutting measure? Seems like you could just skip a few steps there. Also, if a nurse "bids" to work for free, will that legally be allowed? Will the bottom be minimum wage? Will it turn into another tipping nightmare?
This is very likely true. Nurses are in extremely high demand.
From the article:
Nursing roles dominate national hiring trends, with RNs, LPNs, CNAs, and NPs all ranking among the most in-demand positions for 2025. High turnover and expanding care settings are fueling strong job growth across hospitals, outpatient clinics, long-term care, and rehabilitation facilities. Nurses have significant leverage as employers compete for talent, creating more opportunities for mobility, flexibility, and career advancement.
Thats a lot of words to say the hospital is ran by a bunch if anarcho capitalists. Also a great way to fight unemployment they totally arent fired they just arent bidding low enough to be hired
This is just plain evil.
Dang if only someone used Claude to make an alternate portal where nurses could collectively organize and ensure their bids drive the cost of labor higher.
Anyone who decides shit like this should have to do it themselves with their job. If they think it’s fine for others then they shouldn’t have a problem eh.
Had a client try that with my business. Said, Good Luck! And walked away grateful for other clients.
Has NCNA or NNU made a statement? This is crazy!
As things get worse, the oppressors get more desperate and more bold and open in their oppression.
Unite. Unionize.
This is exactly why the fascist southern states make unions illegal.
Race to the bottom! Get ready to back stab your colleagues by undercutting their wages in the quest for you to get more hours. Don't like a nurse? Keep undercutting her wages so she doesn't get any hours and quits. That's going to be a really happy family of nurses working there.
I’ve seen this one before (at a hospital I worked at). Nurses are the most caring compassionate team workers the world has seen. I saw an off book system develop almost overnight where the bids were rationed, every nurse got almost every shift they wanted, and everyone made more money. Administration quietly shut it down after a few months.
This is beautiful. Thank you for the glimmer of hope.
Nurses are amazing and deserve the world. When I was hospitalized with sepsis, I don't remember almost dying. I always remember how kind and wonderful the nurses were to me and my family. The doctor was an absolute dickhead and rude lmao. But I loved the nurses. I hope this happens there and they all make lots of money.
Capitalism is a mental illness that can only be cured by spiritual enlightenment or life in prison. https://preview.redd.it/6p8w7t7xdsgh1.jpeg?width=450&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=11de02a829fbd9ee30488ee3d12de3d1905fe692
Hope they like lawsuits. GodDAMN I hate capitalism.
can we like all just start eating the rich yet?
We're going back to feudalism & peasantry.
wHy WoUlD yOu NeEd A uNiOn???!!!
I've been telling people that employers are (& will) be adopting gig-work type "hiring practices," along with its less than minimum wage pay.
This is truly labor hell
This should be illegal
This exploitation makes me sick. As if nursing wasn’t already a thankless job.
Gig economy nursing. Next up, surge pricing on healthcare.

There is an easy collusive way to defeat this. If the software allows it, get everyone to bid super high.
Bid low. Don’t show up. Nurses’ wages have been steadily declining for decades as hospitals are being scavenged by private equity. How is it that health insurance AND pharmaceutical companies AND medical supply profits have reached record-levels, year after year after year, yet there is not enough money to pay the people who do the actual work caring for other human beings? It’s perverse. It’s infuriating. Unions are the only way out of this, or nursing as we know it will be obliterated. We as patients and as a society will hear the burden of that failure. We cannot let this devaluation and deterioration of standards continue.
How completely fucking disgusting
workers have essentially no rights in NC compared to every other state. that’s why it is also the (formerly 1st) 2nd best state to do business in. union is a bad word here. little miss elevator lady cherie berry fucked us all in her 20 YEARS of being the commissioner of labor. corrupt cunt reduced fines for safety violations, especially for the ones who contributed to her campaigns. not to mention she advocated for abolishing minimum wage. i absolutely place blame on her for creating the conditions for this bullshit to happen.
This is what happens when you don't have a union

This is gross but Organized nurses have a opportunity to do something really interesting here. They could all coordinate their bid to be well above their current pay causing this whole thing to backfire.
Reminds me of a lot of the "gig economy" work, trying to snag a high paying route or offer before someone else or a bot picks it up the moment it gets posted. People will step over each other and start taking lower pay because less is better than nothing.
Kinda sounds like flight attendant bid systems
Heard nursing agencies are checking credit reports too to see who has the most debt and will be most desperate.
I love how making a new word by concatenating two words that should never be together makes it sound official and even cute. Bidshift! All the joy of working and now with the fun of two starving dogs fighting for the last bone!
I just heard a report the other day that companies are already doing this but more insidiously with AI. It was specifically about traveling nurses. It uses their credit rating to make lower offers to nurses with low credit knowing they are more desperate. Pure evil.
Get your union on —oh banned in NC. 😵💫
I don’t see how this is legal for employees, bc essentially everyone is a 1099 contractor on this model if they’re setting their own pay… like there’s some IRS rules here that I think will come into play. But of course we’ll just continue to defund the irs and change the rules to make corps happy.
The nurses need to unionize.
NC law makes it essentially impossible to form a powerful union. It's why union membership in NC is some of the lowest in the US.
This is plain dystopian
UNIONIZE!!!
That’s fucking insane
Heilige scheize!!!! That will require an amazing amount of solidarity for all the nurses to stage a walk-out and for nurses not wanting a change to apply for positions there.
Well now I know where to go if I want to get shitty healthcare from disgruntled, lowest-denominator healthcare workers!
If you ever wanted a sign to unionize--this is fucking it.
As a native north Carolinian.. Ew. Gross
Could you provide a link?

This is how Uber does it's drivers. Fight back.
Nursing apps are also buying user credit data. Offering lower rates to people who are in worse financial situations.
This shouldn’t even be remotely legal
It’s not just there - I’ve seen this come up about other hospitals too. I’m chronically ill and I’m horrified. Bullshit to do to our healthcare workers. Remember how “essential” they were and now look.
The only way to win is to never bid.
