  Argonne published a report a few years ago comparing EV vs gas car costs over the lifetime of the vehicle. IIRC, EVs were super expensive because of the battery and financing while gas cars had more maintenance. Hybrid cars were the cheapest long term.

  Yea. Just oil changes add like $0.015/mi, which is equivalent to HALF the electricity cost just to drive a basic EV (bolt, model 3, etc) That's @$50 per oil change on 3500mi interval.

  Some truth there but I will say as an EV owner who can and does charge most of the time at home, the convenience and even logistics facotor for 95% of the time the ev is easier than my ICE powered car. The most complex thing I have to deal with is having to move some of my kids bikes to get the cord to the car. No more of the 10-15 min of spare time planning to fill up the car. Road trips yeah logistics and convenience flips but it not nearly as bad as everyone try’s to make it out to be. Plus those are a lot fewer where I am breaking 250 mile road trip from home that often.

  Ouff. Where I live we pay 10c per kWh in USD. When I crunched the numbers that equated to $0.87/gallon to fuel an electric vehicle for my use case. So quick math makes that $4.79 per gallon for where you live. Since where I live gas costs $5.38/gallon my savings are huge. Yours would not be.

In the business, we use cost per mile. But CPM is computed by taking all the vehicle costs and breaking them out by mile. So purchase price, insurance maintenance, fuel, electricity, and the big one; depreciation. While I drive and EV, there are very few cases where we see an EV with a lower CPM than an ICE vehicle. We're getting closer with rising fuel prices and lower maintenance, but EV's are still getting crushed in depreciation and that's really where they underperform via CPM.

  You're double-counting capital costs by including both the purchase price and depreciation.
  
  Depreciation is (simply) purchase price minus resale value. If you add full purchase price plus depreciation, you're counting the vehicle's initial cost twice.
  
  Standard Cost Per Mile (CPM) uses Depreciation + Operating Costs (fuel/electricity, maintenance, insurance, fees) all divided by total miles.

  Depreciation matters in the short term but how does the CPM hold over time (e.g. 5 years, 7 years)? Over a long enough duration depreciation is mostly irrelevant.

The problem with this "study" is that is completely leaves out the largest factors that affect cost per mile. All cars cost way more per mile than these numbers. Need to rerun factoring all common costs: 1) purchase price 2) borrowing costs 3) maintenance costs 4) insurance costs 5) registration costs 6) repair costs All of these should be available for fleet averages that you can add to your chart.

3.5 mi/kWh is lower speed, urban driving. Even if you dropped to 2.5 mi/kWh (highway driving) its still cheaper.

When you own a PHEV like I do, you get to directly compare your 2 modes on the same car. When I'm running EV mode, it's like paying $1.75 for a gallon of gas. That's how I explain it to people. The Hybrid part of my car gets 42 mpg and a full charge is 42 miles. So it comes down to what it costs to charge a battery from empty (usable 0%) to full. That's 11.5 kWh, all in (measured at charger). $0.15/kWh. Gets my answer.

  I did the same calculations when I bought my PHEV. 17¢/kWh for electricity so filling up at home is equivalent to getting gas for $1.86/gallon.

The crazy part to me is the electric car cost per mile has been fairly constant in real dollars. Gas prices all over the place but always more expensive. That and I think people forget how fing expensive gas was in 2008. I remember paying $5 a gallon in 2008 in Texas as one point. Breaking 50 to fill up my 13 gallon tank was a regular thing. Also when you get an electric car you become really detached from gas prices and will find out how much of our daily lives we track that as I now go weeks with out noticing it.

I don’t know where yall are getting these ranges. I guess if it’s straight city. I get about 1.6-1.7 on the highway. The EV only became about the same cost as gas when gas hit about $4. Otherwise the EV was way more!! 280 miles of range was costing me around $54 at the stations. Compare that with a gas vehicle only getting 20 miles a gallon… that’s 14 gallons of gas. At $3 a gallon that’s $42, which gas was usually around $2.50 a year or so ago, so even worse.

I was doing some debate lately on if I should buy an EV or a hybrid (\~42 mpg). I generally keep my car for 15+ years (current car is 21 years old). My local gas price is around $3.5 and electricity $0.13. The EV would have lower operational cost and less parts to maintain, but I do my own maintenance anyway and oil change costs me about $30. My biggest worry is 10 years down the road if the EV battery breaks out of warranty, the cost of replacing that would probably total the car, unless non-dealer battery replacement network becomes established. While the hybrid battery replacement already has a non dealer network and cost should be reasonable.
