Electric furnaces are amazing

I was looking for tips on electric furnaces, but aside from 'endgame fully moduled and beaconed smelting array builds', I only find criticism, mostly because they're bigger than stone and steel furnaces. I don't get the hatred for them; even compared to foundries, I love using them.

You can just slap them downanywhere and they work without coal or calcite, meaning you can include them in your factory designs like 'assemblers' for turning iron plates into steel without issue.

You could theoretically provide small to medium factories with only raw ore if you include the smelters in the factory design and ratio them perfectly as well.

Every recipe that would have required you to supply both iron and steel can now just be done with iron plates, saving on (in my case) an extra train worth of infrastructure for a motor factory. Their smelting columns, although longer, are also a lot thinner.

What's the overall modern-day opinion about electric furnaces? Maybe I'm insane, but I love them.

They are very comfortable to use, but they cost double the energy. If you're still on coal power, you'll use twice the amount. If you pay more e.g. eff modules, or have the power to spare, yea they are great.

  Once I had about 1k solar panels and three nuclear reactors with self-perpetuating enrichment, I shut down all the efficiency module production, ratcheted up speed modules and beacons, and went to town.

  Even if still on coal power, I think the tradeoff of not needing to run coal belts everywhere makes them worth it

I use them when the ratios work out. But that usually does not happen for larger builds. My last build used like 50 foundries for smelting ore. Doing that with electric furnaces would take a LONG time to build.

They're not bad, just more of a niche use that you've already outlined. Smelting stuff usually needs to be done in massive bulk, so stone furnaces outperform because of less space required, and they're not as efficient as foundries. They're invaluable on space ships tho, and insanely pollution efficient if you want to rush green modules.

  You can actually make electric furnace take less area in terms of width compared to stone/steel. But they still will take more in terms fo lenght. Why would you turn iron ore into iron plates then into steel when making steel in foundries is much faster? It works without calcite too, all you need is liquid metal. You could also provide small to medium factories a little bit of calcite via bots and make iron and copper things in foundries Every recipe that would have required you to supply both iron and steel can now just be done with molten iron Sure, you can use electric furnaces, but I don't any reason to use them on Nauvis. If you decide to use electric furnaces, you first rebuild your smelting arrays with electric furnaces, then with foundries. I rebuild them straight with foundries

I don't think they're amazing. I think they're extremely bad because you need hundreds and hundreds and hundreds just to fill a belt, which is extremely annoying. 3/4ths of your entire base is going to be furnaces. You're not going to fill a 240 items per second belt with furnaces. Foundries is where it's at.

They need either a Nuclear setup or a large Solar array pre-prepared, because they eat a ton of power, and are bigger than Stone/Steel Furnaces, but are wonderful. I move to using exclusively them for any newly-built smelting setup as soon as I finish my nuclear setup. It's so nice to not have to worry about running an extra belt for fuel - maybe it's not a huge deal, but it is +1 thing you need to worry about. With Electric you just plug them into the network, plug in input/outputs, and they work as long as your electricity holds.

  I use them like crazy, for the reason you give. I do not want to deal with coal as an additional input if I don't have to. I do not have to have efficiency modules unlocked to know they are coming. Foundries and liquid ore are better once available, but if you build all Nauvis sciences before doing Vulcanus, there is a lot of game where you do not have foundries yet.

Yeah, I think the big advantage to electric furnaces is that you can relocate your smelting arrays to ore patches without needing to set up coal or solid fuel transportation, which helps significantly with base organization and makes ore production easier to scale up. Electric furnaces do have the trade-off that they take twice the power of a steel furnace, so if you’re still running coal boilers you’ll end up doubling your coal consumption and pollution if replace your furnace stacks while still running coal. But if you’ve built up solar or nuclear power, they’ll help decrease your pollution load even further since the furnaces themselves only produce 1/4th the pollution of steel furnaces, and that’s before you factor in modules and all that.

  Given that they also have module slots, you can easily reduce their consumption with efficiency modules, making them actually cheaper than steel furnaces in terms of energy.

In terms of their size relative to stone or steel furnaces, I find that once you eliminate belting in coal, the overall footprint for your smelting fields ends up being more or less the same even though the individual furnaces take up more space individually.

I exclusively use them only if there is no foundry recipe, or it's on the space platform before I unlock foundries. I stay on steel furnaces until foundries - if I'm going to replace my smelters, why do it twice? Also I do on-site melting into molten iron/copper and then transport it via train wherever needed. It's more versatile and benefits from foundries' productivity twice.

I personally dont use them much but i can see their use cases. With effy modules theyre more energy efficient than steel, and like you said theyre simple to use. The extra material requirements of foundries and such just arent really an issue for me with how i have my factory set up

Electric furnaces are amazing, because it’s very easy to get quality ones: you slap quality, feed the regular ones to science. Yes, it’s very expensive to set up initially, but it pays off: your base will use electric furnace arrays for a long time, unless you are rushing Vulcanus. Late game they are still the only thing that produces bricks and that lithium stuff on Aquilo.

They are convenient out of the box, sure, if they don't require swapping out existing furnace infrastructure, but personally if I'm not ready to mess with modules I just don't bother. They cost double the power that a steel furnace does, and of course there's the footprint. That said, with efficiency module 1s installed, they become power efficient, as well as highly pollution efficient, if you're playing on settings where that matters. 40% power cost puts them at 80% the cost of steel furnaces, without the need for extraneous fuel lines. As an added benefit, they can be powered with solar, which further reduces they're overall pollution footprint. Of course, their value with late game beacon setups need not be elaborated on. They're the best smelting structure to use late game unless you have space age, and even then, you still need them for stone bricks and lithium plates. So my usual strategy is to just not bother with them unless I either need to cut pollution early or unless beacons are starting to get attractive.

Electric furnaces are still terrible. Why would I pay double the cost in order to get a -100% efficiency malus that also takes twice as much space? It is much quicker and easier to run a single belt of coal to your furnaces than it is to build a powerplant to supply electric furnaces with electricity (unless it is a nuclear power plant) Transporting iron plate around is 5 times harder than transporting steel around (since 1 steel = 5 iron plate) so the idea of turning iron plate into steel at the destination is not appealing. I would rather turn my iron into steel and then just have 1 belt of steel than to keep it in the form of iron and then have 5 belts of iron that I need to route through my factory.
