How to take English and French from A2/B1 to C1 while focusing 100% on Math & Physics in my final year of high school?

Hi everyone,

I’m 16 (turning 17) and entering my final year of high school in a science track (Math, Physics, and Chemistry). Because these subjects are tough and very important for my grade, I need to focus heavily on them. However, I’ve hit a huge roadblock with languages.

Here is my current situation:

French (Estimated A2–B1): I studied French for 10 years at school, but honestly, I never took it seriously. Because of that, my vocabulary, spelling, grammar, and conjugations are really weak.

English (Estimated A2): I’ve studied English at school for less than 3 years, though I pick up a bit online. (I actually used AI just to clean up the spelling on this post because my writing is still quite basic!)

My Goal:

After high school, strong language skills are crucial for college admissions, competitive entrance exams (concours), and interviews. My goal is to eventually reach a C1 level in both English and French (TL).

Given how much time and energy I need to dedicate to Math and Physics/Chemistry this year, I feel stuck on how to balance everything effectively.

Has anyone been in a similar situation? How did you manage to build up your language skills to a professional/academic level without burning out or sacrificing your core subjects? Any practical tips, routines, or resources would be greatly appreciated!

just doing a little every day goes a long way. 30 minutes of french, 30 of english, treat it like brushing your teeth. something you don't skip but don't overthink either for french, find a show you already know dubbed in french with french subtitles. disney+ is great for this, you know the plot so your brain just absorbs the language. for english, do the opposite. watch english shows with english subtitles and pause to look up words that keep popping up. the key is picking stuff you'd watch anyway so it never feels like studying math and physics will eat your brain during the day, so slot language time right before bed or during meals. passive input adds up quick when you're consistent

Unfortunately, getting good at a language takes a lot of time and hard work. You should consider your priorities and invest your time accordingly. Choosing efficient ways to study and finding ways to fill extra time with studying can help. For example, if you watch videos for fun, watch them in English. Use either intensive listening or comprehensible input to make this efficient. Ultimately, you should prioritize mental and physical health first, the. Your school work, and then languages or whatever else you need to do.

You’ve actually answered your own question. If you focus 100% on Maths and Physics, there won’t be anything left over. Please don’t use the & in place of and, this is visually quite irritating.

  Using & in a subject line is 100% normal, and even expected for brevity. That kind of non-correction for someone learning English is significantly more irritating.

Whats your native language? If 100% of your "effort" are in math and science then I think all that remains to invest is to use your enjoyment time to watch english/french tv shows or socialize in those languages.

Hi, I was a B1 in French my junior year in high school and I managed to get into a French university with a high B2 18 months later. Obviously shortly after that I hit C1 but I didn't test it because I had it. (Took the DALF later). This was in the before times thirty years ago but the principles stand: Weekends were my French study time. I had a two old workbooks (there was no internet lol) and I just worked through them. I picked a theme per weekend. Like passé composé or prepositions or whatever and I did all the exercises in both. Offline (even if online wasn't a choice), was crucial because I locked in. I can see a difference in how I learned German- I use the internet as a crutch in German and in French I didn't have a choice. France Info and RFI have internet news. The segments repeat so either leave it on, or keep playing the same segments. If you are a B1 you can do it if you lock in.

  To be fair, I wasn't interested or trying at all before, so I stayed around A1/A2 for years. But once I actually took it seriously this year, I went from A1 to solid B1/near B2 in 9 months for both languages. So yeah! Lol thanks for the comment though

Concours ? Tu vises une CPGE ? Lorsque j'étais en CPGE, j'avais amélioré mon anglais oral de façon notable en me mettant à regarder des chaînes d'info en continu en anglais. L'intérêt de ce type de média en particulier est que j'avais non seulement la partie audiovisuelle mais aussi le bandeau en bas, qui m'aidait en m'apportant du contexte. L'aspect quotidien était un conseil que j'avais vu dans des rapports de jury de concours. Mais je me demande surtout comment tu fais pour arriver à suivre des cours en français en ayant seulement un niveau B1…

  To be honest, I haven't taken an official test! I just asked Gemini for a quick estimate on a text I wrote in 5 minutes, and it said A2/B1. But in reality, I'm very comfortable following my classes in French. Some vocabulary is challenging at times, but it's completely manageable. 🙂

Read in English and French for pleasure, to unwind after studying. At some point, listen to the audiobooks, too. For fun. That's the secret. All it takes is time, and maybe practice exams once you get close to needing proof.
