No, it's a preference. Definitely not better. It's like people how prefer vinyl over digital music.

Some folks like it, some folks don't. The cameras tend to be well made and I (personally) find them enjoyable to use.

it's objectively worse but subjectively very fun. I mostly shoot on an A7R4, but I have an OM10FC for when I wanna spend money every shutter click. Different films have different "filters" and "resolution" if you will, and manually winding the film and cocking the shutter is enjoyable. That said, you can adapt a vintage lens to your modern mirrorless camera and get a lot of the same vibe. Manually operating the lens, finding focus, and clicking the shutter all work the same way, and in camera jpeg filters often mimic film (especially if you own a Fujifilm camera).

I use both, and find them great for different purposes and moments. Digital is much, much easier to get a "good" shot, cheaper once you have the camera, and generally makes the process of taking excellent photos from a technical sense more efficient. Film, particularly when using older more manual cameras, slows things down and makes you focus more deeply on the fundamentals of photography (composition, exposure, etc). One of my favorite cameras is a Rollei 35 that was my grandfather's. It's a gorgeous little camera with a sharp lens that takes fantastic photos, but it's also quite limiting in terms of capabilities with no (working) meter, zone focus, maximum 1/500 shutter speed, etc. I rarely take more than one exposure per scene with film, meaning I have to spend more initial time thinking about the angles, the lighting, the framing, etc, before taking the shot and won't find out how it turned out for a week or so at the earliest.

It is entirely subjective some people simply like the look and there is nothing wrong with that. Some people feel that having a physical negative vs. a digital file somehow makes the image more honest or real. Even though photo editing has been common since the earliest days of photography, and Photoshop has been around since 1990 long before digital photography became dominant. There are plenty of digital film sim tools available that can give digital photos a film like look. I think that unless they have a lot of experience with film most people would not be able to tell the difference between something shot on film, and a digital file that had a film filter applied in post (assuming the editing was not terrible).

It's not a simple preference. It's an appreciation. The texture of the infinite totality of the optical spectrum on the chemistry of film emulsion is never as simple as preferring this or that compared to digital binary 1 or 0 building blocks of tone. Some are blind to it and cannot appreciate this detail. Others grow into appreciation by slow study aand noticing more. This is the nature of the arts. Your friend appreciated and cherished film camera photography which for her is visceral and connecting. If you are open and creatively curious, you'll find a film camera doesn't require a reddit debate mindset.

  Color film also uses three colors to mimic tone or color pallet: red, green, and blue for slide film, cyan, yellow, and magenta for negative film.

It's fun for many reasons. You feel the limitations and the cost, so you think more about each shot, and they also mean more later. On the other hand, each film has its own style, and especially if you send it to a minilab for scanning, you will get quite pronounced, one might say stylized, colors. It frees you from color correction and stylization. And it almost always looks good and organic. When I do something like this in Photoshop, it's hard for me to accept my own result as the only right one, but with film it's easier. You just get a picture, it has character, and that's it. It's a little different if you scan it yourself, but even then, the colors are usually already there. I find if I want to go for a day out with the family or the like, I'm taking my digital camera. I can just shoot a ton of pictures and look over them later. If I want to go out for a walk/ride and just disconnect from everything for a bit I like loading a real of black and white into an old camera and take that out instead, it encourages me to slow down as it's only ~36 photos on a roll and then I've got to pay for the processing. I like the photos on film as they are less likely to be perfect and curated (probably more down to my skill than anything), it just feels a bit more natural than digital.

My view: Many factors make a good photo, but just because a photo was made with film doesn’t make it a good photo.

I shoot exclusively film and love it. It isn't the chepaest medium but it's the most fun, I think. It forces you to learn what you're doing rather than relying on a computer to do it for you. It's a very tactile way to photograph. Yes it's more challenging and you don't know what you did wrong until you get the scans/prints back but that makes it so much more rewarding when you succeed. My advice would be to get a cheap point and shoot or if you're already familiar with photography maybe a good priced SLR and a roll of Kodak Gold 400 or Fujifilm 400 and try it out. Mail the exposed rolls to "The Darkroom Lab" if you're in the US or find a reputable lab in your country/region.

For me the process is humbling. Slowing down and being intentional is therapeutic to me. I shot my whole vacation last month on film (minus a few iPhone shots). Also being forced to use exposure knowledge is good for growing in the craft. It’s worth trying once, id say. But is it better? That’s left to the beholder.

Im 62. I was raised on analog cameras and film. I think digital is a million times better and analog is garbage. The frustration of lining up a shot, waiting for that moment, pressing the button and then you wait, you get it back and it is not how you envisioned it. Only 36 shots. Digital you shoot you see you make adjustments you shoot again until you tell that story. Such freedom . F film

I personally do film to develop it myself and do darkroom prints. If you don’t scan your negatives, and make prints in the darkroom, all photo editing is done physically. Imo it’s a lot more fun to be hands on
