British citizen: TRC/karta pobytu question

Dzień dobry. After 8 months, my application for my second temporary residence permit has progressed to the next stage (fingerprints taken and external reviews completed) and a stempel for my passport. However, I really need to return to the UK this month for medical reasons (the urząd are aware of this).

My question is if I will be able to re-enter Poland in September. My first karta pobytu was issued in 2023 and before this, I had a type D visa before I moved to Poland. Technically I don’t think I have used any of my 90/180 days visa free? I have also emailed the straż graniczna but no rely and I’m not sure if they will speak English with me over the phone.

does the months from stempel to today count in the 90 days visa free?
should I bring copies of rent agreement etc for the border guards?

With the stamp in your passport, you have the right to remain. However, you do not have the right to re-enter and remain. You go back to as if you did not have a visa at all. Your best bet will be to go and get a visa from the consulate in the UK. In my case I got a spousal type d (I think) visa which lasted me for a year and then I got temporary residence. If I was in your situation, there would be no reason why I could not go back to the UK to get that type d visa again while I wait for my temporary residence to come through.

  Im thinking of doing the visa just incase. But with my current situation, could I not re-enter Poland next month with the 90 day visa free because I think my current TRC application would still be in progress ( unless it gets cancelled if I leave)?

The stamp in your passport does not by itself guarantee that you can re-enter Poland. To give you a definite answer, someone would need to check the expiry date of your previous residence card, your planned travel dates and your recent Schengen travel history. Your tenancy agreement and proof of the pending application are worth carrying, but they cannot replace a valid residence card, visa or available days under the 90/180-day rule.

  Old card expired January 2026 (issued 2023). Applied for the new card in December 2025 and got the stamp. Planning to fly to England mid August. Last EU Schengen vacations were 2024 and 2023 using my old residence permit card. Does this mean I still have my 90/180 days intact because I’ve stayed in Poland under a TRC?
