My software development business is dying in the age of AI. I haven't had a project in three years. What should I do?

In the age of AI, my business is no longer doing well. For the past three years, I haven't been able to get any projects.

Most of my target clients prefer to do things themselves using AI. I recently started making promotional videos on social media, whereas before I only relied on regular posts, which used to work quite well. Now, even those promotional videos only get around 200 views, which is very low for social media.

I'm considering trying to find clients outside my country, but I have no idea where to start. I feel that if everyone in my area is using AI, it's possible that the same thing is happening everywhere else. I need advice and suggestions.

I'd appreciate any advice from people who have gone through something similar. I'm a solo software developer.

Upskill yourself? Go out in the world to find the problems? It’s not easy as it was before, competition is high and youth have much more energy as well as cost is lesser

  I've already started moving in that direction. I'm currently focusing on blockchain development, specifically on the Solana network. I still see a fair amount of demand in this field. I had previously built a personal project on Solana, but at the time I decided not to pursue it any further/ The problem is that learning takes time, and my bills keep coming every month. The constant pressure of paying those bills makes it much harder to focus on learning. I keep getting distracted by new ideas because I convince myself they might generate money quickly and help me pay this month's bills. But once again, they don't sell, or people would rather build them themselves using AI. By then, I've already spent a lot of time on those ideas. And the cycle just keeps repeating.

Three years without a project sounds bigger than a social-media reach problem. I'd separate two questions: did AI actually replace the work, or did the old way clients found and bought from you stop working? Start with 10 past clients or lost prospects. Ask what they now do themselves, where that approach breaks, and what they still won't own. Then rebuild the offer around responsibility for the outcome—requirements, integrations, testing, maintenance, and someone accountable when generated code fails—not around writing code by the hour. AI makes code cheaper; it doesn't make unclear requirements or broken handoffs disappear. I wouldn't go international until you can clearly explain why a business should hire you instead of doing it themselves. A wider market won't fix an unclear offer.

  Also every single international consulting/contracting company pivoted to being AI-native and AI-specialists 2.5 years ago. They’ve all, apparently, been working on AI for the past 20 years.

  I’d add that if ai is genuinely replacing most jobs/projects in this field then OP needs to become an expert on ai transformation FOR his field. If you can’t beat em join em and whilst lots of people will lose their jobs in the age of ai, lots of people will also come out with serious wins. It’s the first time there’s a more level playing field, your degree, work experience, awards etc don’t matter; even your ability to code now doesn’t matter. If anyone can now build anything why can’t you?

If you haven't had a project in three years you no longer really have a business. What can you offer that AI cannot? And by that, I mean substantial difference to justify the cost. Most people will take a "good enough" free/cheap solution over a "great" expensive solution. So you need to find a niche that AI cannot cover well at the moment. You can forget about forms over data or api services. Maybe the answer is to not compete with AI but to use AI better than the clients can. So maybe the client can vibe code their website in a week but you can vibe code it for them in a day.

Get a business mentor, coach or adviser. You can't continue if you keep getting distracted, as you say. It's not about the next flashy thing. Sustainable business takes thought and planning, and another person may help you see where your strengths are, and help with accountability.

Position yourself as using AI the same way they do, but quicker and with less room for errors because of your expertise. People pay for speed/accuracy and you can build trust by confirming the fact they can do it themselves but shouldn't have to because you deliver quicker results. I've been vibe coding for five months and it's a pain in my ass because I'm not a developer. Sometimes my prompts suck. Sometimes Claude doesn't understand the scope of the desired outcome simply because it's not a human. I own a housekeeping business and while the FSM I am building works, it's far from perfect. Have a pitch competition locally soon and will be looking for my technical cofounder after that lol

Implement AI for your existing client base. There are many things to consider, particularly security. Often forgotten when they go into production. MVP is easy with vibe coding, production ready is a different story.

Three years without paid work is a demand and positioning problem more than a video-views problem. AI did not erase the need for someone who owns requirements, integrations, security, testing, and support when things break. Talk to former clients and nearby businesses about what they still hate doing after they try AI tools. Package that as a fixed-scope outcome, not hourly coding. Before going international, win two paid local or remote projects with a clear niche and proof you finish what DIY AI leaves unfinished.
