Like seriously it's what car should I buy not a financial advice subreddit. Someone can't post about buying a car without at least one person telling them that it's a bad idea and instead of getting the car they want they should go on FB marketplace buy a mazda3 or Corolla and live with that for the next 20 years. Inherently buying a car will always be a bad financial decision it's a deprecating asset with upkeep costs. BUT maybe that person is willing to live with that and wants advice on the best depreciating asset not what they should do with their money. Finally, maybe the dude doesn't want to own a Corvette when he is 50 and can barely get in the thing cause his back can't handle it. I saw a dude recommend that the person should use the money to buy PROPERTY!!??
the property one always gets me like congrats you turned a car question into a real estate lecture in two sentences i get the instinct to be practical but sometimes people just want help picking a fun way to light money on fire

Yeah I think some people are just projecting honestly. They're jealous they can't afford anything better than some pos 90s Corolla so they hate on others who want nice things.
But it's also that most don't see that cars can be a hobby. Some people are willing to spend more of their income on a car if it's the thing they enjoy.

A car is a great financial decision because I have to get to work somehow and work pays me a lot more than the car I bought.
People often ask for impractical cars on here and the sub provides decent answers. But if you don’t specify then the sub defaults to the most pragmatic choice. I think that’s fine.
I mean you can get a motorcycle and it will do the same thing yet cheaper or bike to work. The person shouldn't need to specify and get their financial situation cross examined though, while yes it may be important to them if they say a budget the the sub should only focus on the budget and the specification they said.
In a vacuum, they are correct that it's always a bad financial decision. You're adding important context to your specific situation that changes the formula. I agree that people drool over Mazdas too much and I agree with you that, in the end, the sub does just fine in general.

It's a bit of meme on this sub at this point. That's what an echo chamber will do. Most people will be served well by at Corolla, Civic, or Mazda3 if they want a sedan or a Rav4, CRV, or CX-5 for an SUV if they aren't sure why to buy. There's nothing wrong with wanting something more fun or luxurious that doesn't necessarily make financial sense. Though you should be pretty certain of what you want if you're getting something impractical though and probably don't need to ask internet strangers if it is okay.
