Hi all, a family member has a 3 hour layover in Sydney and we were wondering what to do in that time. A car is available but she'd like to stick close to the airport. She's been to Sydney before so the typical Opera House and such places have been visited already. She's from the Gold Coast so she's already always on a beach.

Absolutely terrible idea to leave the airport. She’ll need to go back through security when she comes in. She’ll would need to re-enter the airport as soon as she left.
My bad, I worded the post incorrectly. The layover is longer than 3 hours but 3 hours is how much time she has to spare before needing to get back to the airport and through security, in time for her flight. My apologies!!

Go to the bathroom and a cafe and find your next gate
Get a drink at the airport bar and watch the flights come in. Do not leave the airport. They'll never get back in time 🤣

Take a train to Circular Quay (change at Central). Have a meal/drink. Return by train to the airport (change at Central).
3 hours? Catch the train to circular quay walk around to the opera house. Check out the sitrs mayne grab an exoensive drink or snack then turn around and head back to the airport. Good thing its on the direct train line so would probably take around 20 min to get to Circ Quay.
I personally wouldn't risk leaving the airport but if they really insist on it... Go to Citcular Quay via train and grab a meal or something? Sydney traffic is horrendou and trains are alot of the times, unreliable
If they cannot afford ( time or financially) to miss a connecting domestic or International flight ,and yet are willing to trust and rely upon public transport, or no traffic jambs ( if using uber/taxi) for just 1-2 hours sightseeing ( after transport time) then they are a way braver person than I.
Number 1 malatang in Chinatown. 3 hrs is enough if you treat it like a commando raid
She has a layover from where to where? International? Does she have permission to enter the country? By the time she gets cleared through customs, in sydney traffic to the opera house, shell have to turn around and go straight back to be processed back through. If its peak hour - even worse. Stay at the airport.
Border force will only allow someone to clear immigration on an international - international transit if the layover is more than 6hrs. I agree, stay at the airport.

3 hours with a car available, you could do royal national park, Seacliff bridge, back up through Heathcote to the airport.
Train to St James Station and walk around Pitt St shops and eat. Or Circular Quay then ferry to Barangaroo for a nice view and food then she can catch the train at Wynyard Station to go back to the airport.
unfortunately for her they're still working on the complex at the airport where the new sizzler will be. if it was me I'd get a train to the city to get some beers at sweeneys rooftop, but she might not be as into beer as I am
