What should everyday living costs actually be in the UK? (Not salary vs costs – flip it)

Everyone talks salaries vs cost of living. Salaries get inflated. Let’s reverse it.

What should these really cost right now for a normal household (couple/family of 3-4, not London extremes)?

• Weekly food shop (groceries only) £100,£200? • Petrol/diesel per litre £1? • Annual cost of owning/running a normal car £600? • Council tax (Band D or average) £1200? • Average house price / monthly rent £500? • Electricity/gas bill (typical dual fuel) £50?

Current reality feels broken. What would “true” fair costs look like if we stripped out the inflation/tax/greed layers?

What if living in a 3 bed house with a mortgage, 2 cars, 2 children cost £1000 a month.

Then we can look back at what salary range that actually supports desired lifestyle. £30k? £60k

What’s your take on the numbers that should exist?

  I will take: Weekly food shop- 10 quid Fuel- Full tank in my car for 10 quid Cost to run a car- 10 quid Council tax- 10 quid (a month for band D- I'm band A so call it 3 quid) Average house price- Tough one but maybe 10 quid? Energy bill- you won't believe this but... 15 quid

What feels broken, is that everythings increasing, and the government (and it would be the same which ever party are in charge) talks about "the cost of living crisis". We're taxed on our wages, we then pay VAT on pretty much everything, and Fuel duty etc, but instead of lowering the VAT / Duties, they make some token gesture. They can make a meaninginful difference, but choose not to. Yes, Burnham cut VAT on electric bills, but imagine when fuel costs spike, they slash fuel duty to help people out. They could even add it back if fuel costs decrease to reasonable levels again

The issue isn't salary or costs in isolation. The relevant question is what the cost should be as a percentage of the average salary.

Housing and maintenance of housing should be about 1/3rd of income, 1/3 should be able to be spent on food, treats, going out etc, 1/3 into savings for rainy days.

I have a metric we in our family, we have a lot of teachers so we use there salary vs housing costs. Parents paid 3.5x one teachers salary (3 years exp) for there house. It's currently valued at about £450,000. A teacher after 3 years will be on about £37,000. At 3.5x that's about £130,000. So it's more than 3.5 times me expense to by that same house now.

I think many have missed the concept. Most people have a sense of worth about something, something they see as around about figure. For example if we know it costs £5 to make something and we buy it in the shop for £7 we know that £2 is profit. The concept I’m aiming for here is we seem to measure salary against cost and not the other way around. The problem with this concept is that £100k a year salary today is the same as £40K a year in 1987. But, in 1987 cost of living was grossly different today. What I’m saying is today, we know that since Covid prices have been artificially increased well over 200%. We know that utility companies are receiving billions, not millions, billions in gross profit. The concept of this is what truely should be the average cost for a family of two children, 3 children or none? I know that house prices are ridiculous. I know that the cost to build a house is typically 40% or more, less than what they retail at (new build). Then they increase another 20% due to housing demand.
