I really like listening to mixes for EDM. Historically EDM tracks have been made for this mode of listening anyway so it feels much better to me to seek out mixes that have tracks I like and listen to the mixes instead. It's very convenient as well if you want to quickly get a taste of a subgenre. Very interested in your thoughts on this as well if you care to share.
Also, a great mix is so much more than a sum of the individual tracks. Certain tracks dropped at a certain point in the mix elevate it above the rest. I also LOVE good MC-ing over a mix.
I've a few mixes I keep returning to, either due to the selection, the DJ or MC skill, or the sense of progression or vibe throughout the mix. I'll leave a few recommendations here but what I'm really interested in are your recommendations, be it CD-issued ones like Mills' Live at the Liquid Room, something from SoundCloud, or a radio recording. Such a perfect selection and mix, an essential listening for this northern style of garage house. This is the kind of music that will sound fresh forever.
D&B
Ruffstuff/MC Funsta/Skibadee - Kool FM 2007-06-17
If you're gonna listen to a jump up mix, make it this one. This is the mix that NEVER fails to get me hyped, Funsta and Skiba are at their top lyrical form, Ruffstuff is great, and the sound quality is nice, which is not always the case for these radio recordings.
And I love some of Funsta and Skiba's recurring lyrical bits like "Yo Brain, yo Pinky, or is it Ren and Stimpy? If you wanna battle, lick me, here's my number - just ring me."
Philip D Kick aka OM Unit - Astrophonica Podcast 02
Can't go better than this for a showcase of this obscure subgenre of d&b which is footwork jungle.
Dieselboy is the OG amongst the American D&B DJs - not in the least because the degree of love and knowledge he has for all varieties of drum and bass is unparalleled. You can't go wrong with any of his mixes, but this one is something else. Concerning the obscure subgenres of D&B that are known as technoid (hard-techno influenced d&b) and darkstep, it's an impeccable selection and, I would even say, a loving study of those styles which is very emblematic of Dieselboy's approach as a DJ. Essentially, this is 1 hr of having your face melted off.
