Well, what matters is what the author wants to tell. If he says a character is made a certain way, that's the only valid thing. Making things up and trying to change a character or the manga while also pretending to be right makes no sense.

This kind of just seems like a way to dismiss criticism without actually addressing it. Character assassination comes to mind; just because an author took a character in a direction that people don't like doesn't mean that they never liked the character in the first place. Hell, to have an opinion about where a character went almost requires you to like them.
This is exactly what it is, its incredibly stupid way to engage with criticism of a character that they like and they are tired of seeing the criticism. Sometimes the criticism is valid and sometimes isn't, u have to actually understand what the person thinks and is criticizing to get a sense of that and its not always going to be black and white on if the criticism is good or not. Authors are not magical begins that nevet mess up when making decisions for what their characters will do, we have seen countless examples of authors saying they wish that had done something different instead. People seem to understand this when its a character they like that does something they totally feels ruins the character but when the shoe is on the other foot, they get upset at people for being vocal abiut their displeasure with how a character is handled.

I came from a classic LoL post to immediately read this, and so I was in LoL mode hearing it and disagreed. See some LoL characters, Skarner, MF, etc where changed to be more opposite of what they used to be. Anyways to the point, that might sometimes happen in anime, like maybe Naruto. And I think it's reasonable to reject the retcons of a character that make them opposite to who they are. Kabuto and Shikamaru were supposed to be smart, why are they so stupid? Idk Naruto's not as bad with this, yea Sakura was ultra fem, and then got tough, and Neji hated the main family and then sacrificed himself for Hinata, but those are parts of their story, not just being opposite randomly at some point for no reason. Still I would hate if Itachi bullied his little brother or if Tsunade became a pervert, or if Kurama became less adorable. Some times writers in stories suck that hard, and then you hate that part of the character.
