On Thursday, Google introduced a new AI feature into Google Earth which lets anyone fabricate all sorts of misleading or straight up inaccurate satellite imagery, from making it look like a specific place has suffered a drone strike to manifesting a nuclear plant in Iran.

Why YSK: Usually, Google Earth is an exceptionally useful tool for open source intelligence analysts to digitally monitor areas of interest and see how they change over time, say, during a conflict or disaster. Now, Google Earth can easily be used as a tool for disinformation. Don't be fooled by fake satellite images from here on out

You should know they immediately stopped this "Update, 7/31: We know that people uniquely trust Google Earth for a reliable view of the world. We’ve seen geospatial professionals using this feature for a range of useful purposes, however we’ve also seen people sharing screenshots of generated imagery that appear to violate our policies. So we’re rolling back this feature in Google Earth while we work on implementing stronger guardrails.   They fucked up bad by choosing to test it out. Personally I had never thought to second guess satellite images before this, and now I'll never trust them. Even if google isn't making them, another generative AI will with a screenshot and a couple prompts.

It's a shame in many ways. I love writting fantasy and would have been willing to pay out the nose for Google to have some kind of map editing software. Like imagine what the earth would look like if you rotated the earth so that China was the north pole. What would the fridged northern coast of Russia look like with England's climate. But instead of some tool that could be use to learn and grow, we got AI slop that breaks our trust in reality.
