Yep, the first night breaks the rule most people follow most of the time by going to sleep and waking up dirty. But once you've broken it, it feels less wrong until you go back to following it. Have a nice trip
Whenever I do a multi-day trip, the first day I always feel absolutely disgusting. I hate the feeling of going to sleep dirty. From then on out though I’m not bothered at all by it. Maybe kind of a pointless post but I’m waking up from the first night of my three night trip and had this thought lol.

Gotta get that patina going
I never noticed that. I also don't surf the internet while backpacking, in fact I never have signal.
I always try to camp close to a water source, and I wash up a bit before bed and in the AM. Not always possible, but a nice things to have when possible. I'm on east coast so streams are plenty.
Same, up to a point. Usually by day 5 I feel gross again.
I genuinely don’t know how you can be actual backpacking and have any signal. Mine goes out 50 miles before I even reach the trailhead.
This is common for ground dwellers. But you know, you don’t have to live in the dirt. I hammock and carry a lightweight chair (I refuse to call a chair ‘ultralight’ as just having a chair at all is against UL philosophy). I switched 5-10 years ago. And one thing I noticed as an unintentional benefit is that after three nights on the trail, I’m not grimy. Because I’m not crawling around on the ground. I also carry a small washcloth (cut down pack towel), and clean up every night before bed. For one, if I don’t do this I am more likely to suffer from chaffing. I also carry three pairs of socks. Two for hiking to alternate and one for camp/sleep (and hand wash the unused pair and let them dry on the back of my pack). You don’t have to be disgustingly dirty. Just like you don’t have to eat garbage just to get calories (or starve yourself and binge eat in towns). People do this because it is easier. And then wonder why they have health problems after a long through hike.

I usually take a couple days to really marinate before I start feeling gross.
