The state park reservation system is basically just bots at this point

spent like three hours on tuesday morning trying to book a simple tent site for the weekend. The website kept freezing and every time it refreshed, some bot had already snagged the spot. Its actually impossible to just impulsively go sleep in the dirt anymore without planning it literally 6 months out

My partner was getting super stressed about the whole thing so we just completely gave up on the state parks. drove down to connecticut on friday instead and ended up throwing our trusty old coleman 4-person tent up at gibson hill campground just so we could get out of the apartment and stare at some trees for 48 hours

The trip itself ended up saving my sanity. Weather dropped to like 60 degrees at night so sleeping was actually comfortable. cooked some cheap hot dogs over the fire, drank instant coffee, and just existed without looking at screens for two days

kinda thinking the move from now on is just avoiding the major hype spots entirely tbh. Anyone else completely given up on fighting with those reservation websites?

If bots are snagging sites at all, it would be the day the reservations open 5-6 months prior to arrival date. If the site you were trying to get got snagged a few days before the weekend in question, that’s just another last minute human getting a campsite. In 34 years of state park or National Forest Service or COE camping, I have never tried to book a site less than a week out.

  Same. I always book at least 4 months ahead. I will always cancel if it looks like it's not going to work out, so the site is freed up. Waiting until week-of or a week out is never a good idea. Whether with private campgrounds, state parks, and especially national parks.

I disagree with chalking this up to bots. I live in a very outdoorsy state and the good campsites get snapped up the second they open due to people planning ahead to do this. Not everything has to be a conspiracy.

  It’s not quite 50 because some of them use one of the big sites to host their systems (recreation.gov or reservation.org or something I cannot remember without looking it up). But a lot of states do have their own systems, and they get pretty clunky. But I agree with this not really being a bot problem. More likely a lot technical issue, either a server problem or a bad connection, as well as someone else having the same idea as OP.

I’m guessing you’re talking about reservation.gov, which is for national parks. There are 50 different state park systems, and mine has never had this problem.

  People have bots to snag stuff as it becomes available. As for past the initial release of spots, it is less of an issue, but also the less desired spots if there are any available at that point.

It's got it's problems for sure but in your case I think it may have been an innocent mistake. I suspect that the system was holding the site for you for ~5-10 minutes while you completed checkout. When the website crashed on you, it started a new instance for you, so it was still temporarily holding the site for your previous instance and not letting you reserve it for your new instance. If it's a site you really want, I bet if you try again a little later or even tomorrow, it'll be available again. I've had this happen to me before. Not sure if it was on State Park reservation site or just some other reservation or ticket site for something completely different. But either way, very frustrating! Sorry!

Whenever you add a site to your cart it holds it for 15 minutes. If you were adding a site to your cart and then the site crashed like you said and you came back and the site is now booked, it could be your own phantom cart that's still holding it for 15 minutes

I found a cancelled reservation for a popular campsite on a Wednesday. I immediately jumped on it. When I arrived we were only campers in the whole campground.

  that happened to me 100% of the time I went camping this year. We had to camp Sunday - Tuesday because it was all we could get. The camp host said the place was a ghost town all weekend. Every site had names and dates but all were empty. I hope they start enforcing the ban on people who flake. It's ruining camping for everyone. If you're going to book it, at least show up!

  I worked in a national park for 23 years who operated on a first come first serve basis before going to rec.gov. Now the campgrounds are never more than half full, despite being reserved. The park could care less because it is less work. The administration loves it because its goal is to make public perception of park management fail in order to gain support for privatization.

  The campgrounds near me are absolutely full to capacity. I used to work at a 150 site campground and it would book up within minutes of being released six months in advance. We’d have maybe 5 no shows on a given night. People think it’s bots because the campground is half empty when they show up, but they don’t realize that a lot of people don’t show up until super late and leave early, or they’re sleeping in a van that they’ve driven to go get dinner, or they booked the site just for day use (which they were allowed to do).

Ever since COVID, the interest and desire to camp has sky rocketed. I've had some success with trying to book a week or two out, but have had to change where I wanted to go, several times, due to availability. I have had much better luck getting sites at National Recreation sites. I do have the National Parks and State Park pass. It makes things easier for me.

I just traveled from Illinois to Washington state and back and did not book anything ahead of time. I showed up to campsites and 9 out of 10 times, a space was available. I was on a motorcycle and tent camping. I dispersed camped several nights also with no problem. I wasn't hanging near the interstates and was often in very rural areas.

  Do you mind me asking how you carry your gear on a motorbike? I'm thinking of doing so in about 5 years, and while I can pack pretty lightly, I am comfortable car camping, but am getting tired of driving a big van for a solo camp. I'd love a BMW touring bike, so don't know what you use, or what you've seen.

Check the cancellation policy and look on the last day people can cancel for free. Some parks also require multiple day bookings for weekends which is why some sites are empty. People also book multiple days in advance when sites are released to get the prime days even if they don’t need them. I’ve noticed a few states now require you to check in by a certain time the day after your first night. If you haven’t checked in, they cancel your multi-day booking. Hopefully those policies help make some sites available. Some states stop online bookings a few days before the date which kind of sucks when you’re looking last minute. You can always call but it’s hard to get someone at the park to answer the phone. I’ve had better luck at COE campgrounds for last minute stays than state parks. Less amenities though but gets you into nature.

I'm not sure which state you're in, but it's hard to get car camping spots in my state as well. There's a park I camped in that requires a 5 mile hike to the camp site and that kept the riff raff out. I'd just recommend doing that tbh.

I have pretty much given up trying to book 6 months out in California. I tried every morning for weeks to reserve campsites 6 months out, starting in November/december, logging in at 745, waiting to click reserve at 8:00, only to see them completely full. I recently read an article confirming that bots are definitely at play. The author created their own bot and was able to secure campsites. They just snap up all the sites the day they open up. I’ve had better luck getting a reservation 1 week out than 6 months out.

  as a full time CA camphost who deals with the backend of ReserveCA a *lot*, you are wrong. the state has close to 40M people and about 15k campsites. and maybe 3k of those on the coast. organized groups of families, churches, scouts, etc *will* book many sites when the booking window opens. (and there are a few trick they know and use that most people do not)

Agree with everyone else. This isn’t bots. Only poor planning and expectations on your part. This is the busiest part of the year for camping. But it’s also 2026 so you can always look at Hipcamp. Though even they can bookup during the weekends during peak camping season. Experienced campers learn to book sites several months in advance if there’s a spot you absolutely want.

We made reservations in 8 or 9 state parks in different states last summer. My overall impression at the end of our 8 week trip (CT to MT to UT to CO to WV then back to CT), is that the parks were heavily booked but not as heavily occupied when we got there. In a few of them, I went online to compare booked campsites with actual occupancy. In general, there were a lot of booked but empty sites. This is just one observation, but it seems to support the suspicion that reservation systems are set up to maximize income for the parks but not care as much about occupancy and service to the people.

I'm calling bullshit. Not sure where you live, but I live in Massachusetts and just looked at VT, MA, and NH state park reservation websites and was able to find availability. I've lived here for decades and been camper at the state parks for the past 15 years and never had an issue booking a state park campsite like you described, with the specific exception of booking a yurt on Boston Harbor islands on a weekend (they are only open like 12 weekends a year and only have like 8 yurts or something and they release the dates on a strict schedule so everyone who wants one is trying to book at the same exact minute). Sure, sometimes I can't book a reservation at a specific campground I want to go to because we live in the most densely populated area in the country and there's a limited number of sites you can reserve in advance and, duh, summer weekends are the most popular time to go camping. But if you just want to get away and don't care where it is, there's always options. If you care that much about where you go, you need to be more proactive and plan ahead. Book the site you want months in advance like an adult. This isn't a state parks problem. It's a YOU problem.

Had you already put the site in your “cart”? Because if you did and it froze, the website holds that reservation for a period of time, making it seem like it’s reserved. I know this because I called our state park system and they explained this to me and then helped me get the spot.

Sadly, this is the reality of camping post-COVID. My family spends a week in the #1 most popular campground in Wisconsin during August. You literally have to be online 11 months in advance and click like a lunatic to hope you get a space. It's exhausting and ridden with anxiety. I honestly hate it. I end up having to book more days than I really want in order to guarantee I get the dates I \*DO\* want. Smaller, less popular parks are much easier to get into. Weekday reservations are also a lot easier to get into. I have only ever camped in State Parks, but sometimes I wonder if the private campgrounds might be a bit easier (although pricier) to get into.

Respectfully, I doubt it’s bots. There is no incentive for bots to take over state park reservation systems. Clear your cookies, see if your browser needs updating, or try a different browser altogether. Or go old school and call to book the site. I frequently book in Wisconsin and I have never experienced what you describe.

Yes, I have been having the same issues and end up now using private campgrounds a lot of the time. Many times I am the only tent camper there. I believe the way to fix it is not give full refunds. People make the reservation, then cancel 48 hours before their reservation starts. Others want to secure a campsite more than 48 hours ahead so they can plan accordingly. If someone cancels less than a week ahead of time after the holding the reservation for nearly 26 weeks, maybe only refund 2/3 of the price. Give full refunds only a month in advance.

I'm in a state (Texas) where there's no BLM land, almost no public land, and our State Parks are booked solid on weekends unless you want to spent 10 hours driving out West. At my last camping trip I met a woman who told me two things were happening, (1) within proximity to a city, there are people who find it 'affordable housing' as there's water, electricity and sometimes showers. (2) There's a sort of underground AirBnB or something, where they're booked and then 'sold' because it can be refunded last minute if nobody is a taker. So the rest of us are staring at a full campground.

I think it highly depends on the park. I've never had trouble reserving a state campground spot, personally, but I also don't even bother trying to reserve spots at the campgrounds where I know they're going to fill up months in advance.

I've been getting frustrated with my state's reservations too. It says reservations open up 120 days in advance, so back in April we made plans to go to a famously overbooked state park in August. I went to book the reservation on literally the 120th day before and when I was looking through there were only a handful of campsites open. Many were already booked for several days or a week out. It's extremely frustrating. At least our campsites here tend to actually fill up, so at least people are using them, but I would really prefer not to always have the leftovers when picking sites.

Tent sites are soooo much easier to come by. We got a camper this year and I was shocked at how far out those sites get booked. I went motocamping from Ohio to Moab last summer and only booked a day ahead of time the whole way. Never had an issue finding a site. No way I could do that with the camper

I would try calling them. A state park near me has a website that shows every date is booked, but when I called many sites were open, and they had some reserved for in person payment only, first come first served. And being cash, there was no way to pay online or with a card once there.

We camp in Wisconsin and I hear this is a big issue with the really popular parks and high demand sites (lakefront, etc). Maybe electric sites too. People also book a full 2 week stretch as soon as reservations open for the first day just so they can get one weekend and they don't always cancel the extra days promptly, or booking the 3 night minimum for holiday weekends and only staying one night. You have 24 hours to occupy your site before the park can cancel your reservation but in reality they're too low staffed to go around and check whether sites are occupied and open them up in the reservation system. Thankfully we've still been able to get good tent sites a few months out since we're non-electric tent campers, usually have some schedule flexibility, and we camp weekdays, but there are clearly a lot of problems with the system being vulnerable to both bots and assholes. On the other hand, the reservation systems at the other states I've looked at are so unwieldy I usually give up long before even trying to pick a site and book. I can handle competition if the site is at least usable.
