Sounds great. The vieux carre and negroni are two of my favorite cocktails, so I'm always mixing these ingredients kinda randomly. Love them in many combinations. I'll have to try this.
Continuing my deep dive into the four equal parts genre of drinks, I’ve created something I’m quite proud of and would like you to try.
This drink came about after making a Naked and Famous with Benedictine Liqueur rather than Yellow Chartreuse (I have yet to land a bottle). The mild, herbaceous, honeysuckle flavor of the the Benedictine tempers the smoky mezcal and punchy Aperol. I’m always looking for drinks to put Benedictine in (I think it’s wonderful), so I decided to create my own.
I opted for Campari instead of Aperol for my amaro choice, as I wanted something a little more sophisticated and I love its red color. To go alongside it, I thought bourbon at first, as I know it works in the Boulevardier, but then decided on a corn-forward rye instead to really keep some big punchy spice while retaining that bourbon sweetness.
Lemon seemed like the better juice for this, as the malic acid of lime would add bitterness that I didn’t need.
An orange twist to play up the orange notes in the Campari and to marry it to the whiskey.
What you get in the end is a gorgeous pink drink that packs a wallop in the flavor department. Plenty sweet but still complex, sophisticated. A new staple in my household.
I present to you:
Leilani
¾ oz Rye (Corn Forward)
¾ oz Campari
¾ oz Benedictine Liqueur
¾ oz Lemon juice
Shake
Up
Orange Twist

Will give this a try tonight!
I love the walk you took from Naked and Famous to get here while standing so close to the Paper Plane. I’ll definitely be trying this though
Also now on my to-try list.
I will have to give it a try, thank you. BUT...since you specify corn forward, dare I ask if this makes a perfect time for Mellow Corn? 😁 r/MellowCorn
\*Mellow Corn Tangent- Several years ago Heaven Hill was planning on a Mellow Corn single barrel program, and, I believe it was to be at barrel proof. We were on the list for a pick, but HH ended up scrapping the idea. It would’ve been awesome!
Looks like you essentially ended up with a Monte Cassino where the Yellow Chartreuse is subbed for Campari. Definitely sounds interesting! What’s the story behind the name?
Super excited to try this. Thanks for sharing.
If you like Benedictine, David Wondrich quotes a news article claiming the original recipe for the Singapore Sling was equal parts Benedictine, gin, cherry Heering, and lime juice with Ango bitters to taste, then topped with a splash of soda. It’s a great cocktail and very Benedictine forward.
I think I'll try this, I have half a lemon I need to squeeze. If I just add in the same amount of the other ingredients, I don't care about the end size.
This looks great. I'm upping it to 2oz per and going to town on it.
